Identifies animals by accepted methods, conducts monthly census and maintains accurate recordsRestrains, handles, and determines sex of all common laboratory animals without injuring animals or endangering himself/herselfProvides for husbandry and care needs of routine colony animals and special transgenic breeding colonies, including the provision of feed and water to animals; changing cages/racks, maintaining and monitoring proper environment, sanitizing animal rooms and equipment, performing general housekeeping of facility and completing and maintaining associated documentsPerforms special animal handling and maintenance procedures under bio-hazardous conditions, such as may be encountered when working with non-human primates and animals experimentally inoculated with specific agentsRecognizes when animals are sick, distressed or otherwise abnormal and communicates these observations to the Operations Manager and Animal Health Unit personnel or attending VeterinarianAssists Animal Health Unit personnel in the routine grooming and treatment of laboratory animalsAssists Environmental Enrichment Specialist in providing routine and prescriptive enrichment to non-human primatesPerforms mathematical calculations in conjunction with preparation of special animal diets or solutions for disinfecting / sanitizing equipment and facilitiesParticipates in the operation and maintenance of animal facility support areas (cage wash operations, animal and supply receiving dock, treatment and procedures rooms, bedding room, hallways, etc.) and related tasks as directed by the Operations ManagerAssumes responsibility for some routine administrative responsibilities, such as ordering supplies, and responding to facility emergencies during the absence of the Operations Manager
REQUIREMENTS
Requirements:High school diploma or GED requiredThree-five years' experience in care of laboratory animals requiredAALAS certification at LAT level preferredAble to sit or stand for long periods of timeProficient with computer skillsVery good written and oral communication skills
