The Technical Research Assistant Technician functions as a support staff member for the studies carried out by the Division of Sleep Medicine in the Environmental Scheduling Facility (ESF) and in the General Clinical Research Center (GCRC). All responsibilities of the Technical Research Assistant are carried out under the direction and supervision of Circadian or GCRC Technicians, the Circadian or GCRC Chief Technicians, or an investigator. Duties include carrying out protocol events during inpatient and outpatient laboratory studies at specific times, including: completion of pre-sleep and post-sleep events, administering experimental interventions (light exposure sessions, exercise sessions), ensuring subject adherence to protocol events, ensuring subject wakefulness during periods of extended wake, and other interventions as scheduled by Investigators using the ESF or IPM facilities. Other duties include, but are not limited to, assisting with the collection of data, monitoring data collection computers, taking and documenting vital signs, documenting protocol events, applying electrodes and other data collection sensors.Assists with major experimental protocol events, including bedtimes, waketimes, light exposure sessions, constant routines (extended wakefulness), and other protocol events as scheduled by the Investigators.Prepares and applies electrodes for sleep and waking EEG recordings according to standard procedures.Collects and processes biologic specimens, including urine and saliva, according to standard procedures and at scheduled times.
Processes blood samples.Monitors data collection equipment, including temperature collection computers, subject testing computers and EEG collection systems.Administers written and computerized tests of performance, memory,
alertness, administers post-sleep and exit questionnaires.Prepares and distributes meals as scheduled in protocols, and documents via computer and logbook/medical record.Monitors and documents subject vital signs, sleep/wake cycles, EEG/EKG patterns, daily hemoglobin, weights and fluid intakes.Travels to other hospital departments, as required, to obtain necessary supplies and equipment for experiments.Follows universal/standard precautions and maintains clean and safe work and subject areas, reports unsafe work areas to appropriate personnel.Maintains the safety and well-being of the experimental subjects at all times.Demonstrates professionalism and respect for subject rights and individual needs.Collaborates with other ESF and GCRC staff members to more effectively organize work to get all research events completed as scheduled, as well as have a better understanding for future careers.Performs all others duties, as required.
REQUIREMENTS
College undergraduate with college credits required.College undergraduate required. Prefer individuals with science or patient-care background and interest in scientific research.Good organizational and interpersonal skills necessary.Able to prioritize and manage time efficiently.Ability to follow directions carefully, and once trained, to work with a minimum of direct supervision.Must possess the ability to continually learn new skills and update
existing skills.Ability to maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and to work cooperatively with peers.Computer experience required.Ability to perform his/her role in a team effort. Initiative and sound judgment are displayed in crisis or unexpected situations. Takes on additional work when the situation requires it.
