SUMMARY:The technical research assistant will perform various experiments under the close supervision of the principal investigator. This person will perform his/her duties according to the established hospital and departmental policies. Routine laboratory tests will be performed under the guidelines of our laboratory. The person will record test results and maintain the cleanliness of the laboratory and ensure that all equipment is in working order. In addition, the person will be instructed in basic radiation protection from the Radiation Safety Office. He or she will be encouraged to attend lectures as well as laboratory meetings in order to include her/him in the overall environment of the laboratory. It is anticipated that after 2-3 months of on the job training in the laboratory, this person will be able to function independently in conducting established laboratory procedures. However close supervision will always be enforced.PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:1. Under close supervision, this person will perform the following routine tests under well-established procedures in our laboratory. These routine tests will include tissue and cell culture techniques, standard gel electrophoresis, and DNA isolation and purification.
2. This personnel will record methodologies performed and tests results obtained in a log book. These records will be kept in chronological order. He or she will alert the principal investigator as to any discrepancies in the methodologies used or tests results obtained.
3. This personnel will identify unusual findings and report such findings to the principal investigator or supervisor.
4. He or she will assist in ordering all chemical reagents needed for the experiments.
5. This personnel will maintain equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner.
6. This person will observe all established departmental policies, procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control guidelines.
7. He or she will perform other duties and responsibilities as directed but will be instructed to these tasks beforehand.
8. This personnel is encouraged to ask any questions regarding any procedures performed and will not be forced to perform any laboratory tests against his or her wishes.
REQUIREMENTS
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:1. In addition, this personnel must have a very sound understanding of laboratory policies and procedures, especially those requiring radiation safety. She/he will obtain this by having at least 2-3 months of on the job training and continued lectures and courses involving radiation safety throughout her/his work here.
2. This individual must demonstrate good manual dexterity as well as careful attention to details. He or she is expected to report any unusual findings or discrepancies to the supervisor or the principal investigator.
3. This individual is expected to take the basic radiation and safety protection course as well as be knowledgeable in handling and disposal of hazardous material. If this individual has not had the training she or he will receive it on the job.
4. He or she will notify the supervisor when an accidental spill or mess is created or when equipment is not in working order.
5. He or she must be able to maintain a neat and orderly working environment so that research can be conducted in safety and with efficiency.
