Research Scientist

Basic Functions and Responsibilities: **Exempt**Provide scientific, technical, and software engineering leadership in conceptualizing, designing and managing research studies or projects, and in disseminating the results and implications of research projects in the field of speech technology, or portions of large-scale research studies or programs in the same field.Develop and/or modify speech processing theories to conceptualize and implement new capabilities in automated scoring and speech technology-based analysis and evaluation systems which are used to improve assessments, learning tools and test development practices.Apply scientific, technical and software engineering skills in designing and conducting research studies and capability development in support of educational products and services.Develop proposals for research projects and obtain financial support for new or continuing research activities. Prepare initial and final proposal and project budgets.Design and conduct complex scientific studies functioning as an expert in the major facets of the projects; respond as a subject matter expert in presenting the results of acquired knowledge and experience. Consult and collaborate on problems arising from substantive research and/or testing programs, or corporate management concerns.Direct and/or participate in the conduct of research projects involving a variety of management skills for staff assignment and scheduling, the monitoring of financial performance and the identification, acquisition and utilization of equipment, facilities and services.Implement dissemination activities utilizing various methodologies to reach specific audiences. Disseminate knowledge, particularly the results of activities through the publication of research papers, progress and technical reports, the presentation of seminars or other appropriate communication vehicles.Promote and maintain professional relationships as a representative, consultant or advisor to external advisory or policy boards and councils, research organizations, educational institutions and educators. REQUIREMENTS
Education: A Ph.D. in Natural Language Processing, Computational Linguistics, Computer Science or Electrical Engineering with major education in speech technology, and particularly in speech recognition, Is required.Experience: Evidence of at least three years of independent substantive research experience and/or experience in developing and deploying speech technology capabilities, preferably in educational environments, is requiredDemonstrable contributions to new and/or modified theories of speech processing and their implementation in automated systems.Practical expertise with speech recognition systems and fluency in at least one major programming language (e.g. java, perl, c/c++, python)
