Works independently under the overall direction of the Channing Laboratory director. Performs full scope of management responsibilities in a research laboratory, including supervision and training of staff activities, inventory management, etc. Prepares and oversees animal and human protocols used in the laboratory. Assures that all lab protocol as required by BWH/HMS, such as use of radioactivity, IRB's and use of animals, is maintained and followed. Independently performs highly sophisticated experiments. Participates in the design of experimental protocols. Interprets experimental results in conference with other researchers.Manages all laboratory personnel, including orientation and training of research fellows, faculty and technical research assistants in laboratory procedures including in vivo models and in vitro assays.Accurately and completely documents all experimental protocols.Operation and supervision of laboratory equipment e.g., flow cytometer, confocal microscope.Maintenance and upkeep of laboratory equipment, which will include coordinating calibration of pipettes, negotiation with vendors for service contracts and quotes for purchase of capital equipment and instruments.Responsible for inventory management and purchases of all laboratory consumables.Prepares and monitors all animal protocols.Maintenance and breeding of wild type, transgenic and germ free mouse colonies.Running tissue culture facility.Prepares and monitors all IRB protocols. Drawing of human intravenous blood.Independent design and execution of experiments.Responsible for the coordination of all regulatory and compliance activities for the lab.Is an active member of the Safety Committee involved with policy decisions and manages removal of biohazardous waste.Acts as a Radiation Officer by assuring that all laboratory members have undergone proper training in use of radioactivity and other biohazardous materials.As appropriate, participates in certain aspects of grant and proposal writing.Reports on work in progress in lab meetings and interprets experimental results in conference with other researchers.Other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum of Bachelor's degree in Science; B.SC in Biology preferred. Master's preferred. Five years of progressively more responsible research work experience. Prior supervisory experience required.Ability to effectively supervise others.Ability to deal with internal and external inquiries with diplomacy, excellent communication skills is a priority.Excellent organization skills to ensure smooth functioning of lab.Extensive animal handling experience.Must possess a scientific imagination commensurate with the independent execution of research projects. Demonstrated analytical skills and ability to logically sequence experiments to maximize research.Experience with handling radioactive materials, human tissue samples and bloodborne pathogens.Must be able to make independent, effective decisions in appropriate situations.Must have aptitude for technical problem solving.High level of computer literacy.Normal research laboratory environment. May be required to lift, move and transport research materials and equipment. May be exposed to hazardous materials under controlled conditions. These include but are not limited to standard laboratory chemicals, radioactive materials and bloodborne pathogens.
