Workers: Insiders a risk to ID security

Almost two-thirds of U.S. employees believe their co-workers, not external hackers, are the greatest threat to their customers' data, a Harris Interactive survey has found. The study, released Monday, also found that almost 70 percent of U.S. workers approve of government regulations as a way to prevent identity theft and improve database security, but only 5 percent had heard of the coming California law that would require companies that do business in the state to report breaches in privacy.

The report, commissioned by security firm Vontu, interviewed 500 U.S. workers in May. Nearly half said that it would be easy or extremely easy for workers to steal sensitive data from the corporate database.
