Senior Scientist, Research Formulations (R4)

Position in the Research Formulations group (level R4 to R8, depending on experience) to evaluate physical and biophysical properties of organic compounds relevant to drug delivery. Communicate the interpretation and implication of results to drug discovery teams, Pharmaceutical Science project teams and management, and portfolio management groups. Develop formulations for administration of drug candidates to animals and humans; with particular attention to drug candidates having low solubility in aqueous media. Design experiments to determine the stability of organic compounds in formulations, to detect and identify the decomposition products, and to achieve formulations with acceptable shelf-life. Lead efforts within group on material efficient tablet processing. Conduct novel research programs that yield contributions of value to both Pfizer and drug delivery scientific knowledge. Maintain an awareness of and contribute to current scientific literature; actively apply new concepts as appropriate. Perform laboratory experiments related to the above areas as well as supervise and effectively develop other scientists.
REQUIREMENTS
Educational Background
MINIMUM: MS or PhD in Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biophysics

DESIRABLE: PhD in Pharmaceutics, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biophysics

Work Experience
MINIMUM: Ph.D. with minimum 0-3 years or MS with 7 years experience in industry. Established track record for contribution as an individual technical expert. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Expertise with at least one analytical or characterization technique. Sophisticated knowledge of physical chemistry, physical organic chemistry, or pharmaceutics and a drive to apply that knowledge to developing drug delivery systems and formulations. Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems in a scientific field. Ability to contribute constructively to team-based decision-making.

DESIRABLE: Minimum 3 years experience in preformulation or discovery support, and at least 2 years of supervisory experience. Experience in oral formulation development, preformulation studies, or demonstrated capability with pharmacokinetic models for predicting exposure following oral delivery. Demonstrated knowledge of common solid tablet processing equipment (e.g., roller compactor, tablet press, granulators). Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

OTHER ATTRIBUTES DESIRABLE: Enthusiasm about drug delivery. Strong scientific leadership and direction of new technology initiatives. History of publications, patents, and external presentations. Capability in oral solution and oral suspension dosage form development. Ability to propose realistic reaction mechanisms for drug degradation prior to identification of actual decay products. Facility with computational chemistry tools to predict physical properties.
