Power Plant Technician

Purpose: Be part of the operations team at a privately held independent power company at our Fresno site. Job duties will include power plant operations, maintenance of instruments electronics & controls systems. Experience with GE aero derivative gas turbines, Pratt & Whitney turbines, DCS & plant control systems a plus. Must have strong desire to develop and maintain very high equipment standards.



In addition, here are the types of duties that would be performed (in job description type language). As I described, some plants have multiple positions, but we have collapsed operating, maintenance & I&C duties into one position. Everyone has to qualify as an operator, and then we look for either strong mechanical or I&C skills.



Operating duties:



Reads meters and gauges or automatic recording devices at specified intervals to verify operating conditions.



Records data such as temperature of equipment, hours of operation, fuel consumed, temperature or pressure, water levels, analysis of flue gases, voltage load and generator balance.



Adjusts manual controls or overrides automatic controls to bring equipment into recommended or prescribed operating ranges, switch to backup equipment or systems, or to shut down equipment. Opens and closes valves as required for proper system operation and electrical isolation. Opens and closes circuit breakers for proper system operation and electrical isolation.



Visually inspects equipment at periodic intervals to detect malfunctions or need for repair, adjustment or lubrication.



Maintains equipment by tightening fittings, repacking bearings, replacing packing glands, gaskets, valves, recorders, and gauges, and cleaning or replacing burners or other components.



Perform PM's. Oils and lubricates equipment.



Performs basic water chemistry testing and adjusts the input of chemical additives into plant water system equipment.



Records operation and maintenance actions taken during startup, shutdown, and on-shift in operators log.



Performs basic corrective maintenance in accordance with technical manuals.



Reads and understands technical manuals and system piping and instrumentation diagrams.



Prepares legible and understandable work orders for required preventative and corrective maintenance.



Initiates purchase orders for spare parts.



Reads, understands, and complies with all plant safety and regulatory procedures.



Responsible for carrying out the above duties, an all other reasonable duties as assigned, while complying with the applicable plant environmental, fire safety, and health programs. Training in these areas will be given to the employee.



Maintenance duties:



Routine maintenance repairs on all equipment, such as pump removal and repair, which includes estimating man-hours, writing work assignments and keeping records of expended materials and labor. Also, general maintenance duties from cleaning cooling tower to scrubbing and painting pipes.



Maintains a good inventory of the necessary spare parts, tools, equipment, chemicals and consumable items required for the daily operation of the plant.



I&C type duties:



Calibrate electronic and pneumatic controllers, maintain high voltage switchgear and switchyard, operate and maintain ammonia absorption and steam systems.



Will be on 24-hour call to troubleshoot electrical and/or mechanical problems.



Conduct air pollution tests required by various government agencies and generate necessary reports required.
