CHILDREN’S SOCIAL WORKER TRAINEE DEAF SERVICES
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Receives instruction and practical experience in the following activities: Investigation and evaluation of cases of deaf or hard of hearing, neglected, abandoned, or abused children and their families which may be deaf or hard of hearing referred to the Department of Children and Family Services; assessing such factors as social history, environmental, economic and psychological influences; arranging and supervising the placement of children in foster homes and institutions; family maintenance and reunification actions including assisting parents and foster parents in resolving problems and reestablishing the family; counseling children and clients toward socially acceptable behavior and self-sufficiency within the community; preparing routine reports for use by the department and the court in making dispositions of juveniles cases; developing and implementing alternative plans to placement where appropriate; evaluating and maintaining records on the progress of assigned cases; and preparing correspondence and maintaining records pertinent to case activity; operates a County or personal vehicle in order to investigate reports of neglected, abused or exploited children, as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
OPTION I -Bachelor’s degree from an *accredited college with a major in psychology, sociology, social work, child development, or a related human services field AND Proficiency in American Sign Language.
- OR -
OPTION II -Bachelor’s degree from an *accredited college -AND- One (1) year of paid experience in a social service agency providing protective/placement casework services to children or families with children** AND Proficiency in American Sign Language.
**Custodial (group supervision type) services are not qualifying experience. Protective casework services are defined as social work services to children who are abused or neglected as determined by the court system; or services to families as required by the court due to the neglect or abuse of the child, OR prior to court intervention, the removal of a child by the social worker from the home for his/her protection. Placement services are adoptive type services.
LICENSE: Some positions in this classification, depending upon assignment, require possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver License to perform job-related essential functions. Candidates offered these positions would be required to show proof of a driver license before appointment.
License Information: Successful applicants for this position will be required to obtain a copy of his/her driving record from the California State Department of Motor Vehicles before being appointed. A copy of your driving record must be presented at the time of your appointment. License must not be suspended, restricted, or revoked. AN APPLICANT WHOSE DRIVING RECORD SHOWS FOUR OR MORE MOVING VIOLATIONS WITHIN THE LAST TWO YEARS WILL NOT BE APPOINTED.
PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light: Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

REQUIREMENT INFORMATION: *Accredited institutions are those listed in the publication of regional, national or international accrediting agencies which are accepted by the Department of Human Resources. Publications such as American Universities and Colleges and International Handbook of Universities are acceptable references. Also acceptable, if appropriate, are degrees that have been evaluated and deemed to equivalent to degrees from United States accredited institutions by an academic credential evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. For each job held, give the name and address of your employers, your job title, beginning and ending dates of employment, description of work performed and salary earned. Attach any additional pages to your

Candidates who expect to qualify under Option II, MUST SUBMIT AN ORIGINAL LETTER WITH THE APPLICATION FROM THE APPROPRIATE EMPLOYER(S) VERIFYING THE QUALIFYING PAID EXPERIENCE, AND HOW THIS EXPERIENCE MEETS THE REQUIREMENTS. FOREIGN DEGREES: It is our policy that any Social Work Degree from a foreign country must be evaluated by the COUNCIL ON SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION - 1600 DUKE ST., ALEXANDRIA, VA 22314, (703) 683-8080. Any other degree (Psychology, Sociology, Child Development, Human Services) must be evaluated by a local accredited university, or by an Academic Credential Evaluation agency recognized by The National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. The written evaluation must state the degree and major as determined by the evaluating body.
