Theater Production Technician

Princeton University is a vibrant community of scholarship and learning that stands in the nation's service and in the service of all nations. Chartered in 1746, and known as the College of New Jersey until 1896, it was British North America's fourth college.Position Summary: This position is for a Production Technician (Lighting Emphasis). Assists the Production Supervisor in the advanced planning for the day-to-day production events that are held at Richardson Auditorium and for theatrical and concert productions at Taplin Auditorium. This Production Technician assists the Production Supervisor in the oversight of the following tasks for each and every event in Richardson and Taplin: 1. Takes the lead in the most complex lighting system designs, programs the lighting board and operates the lights for rehearsals, performances and event. 2. Maintains complex lighting (including an automated system), sound, video, stage lift and rigging equipment, and orders equipment and supplies. 3. Provides technical assistance for performances and events. 4. Coordinates the set-up, strike and storage of stage scenery and properties. 5. Directs load-in/out of equipment for events, rehearsal, conferences, and classes. 6. Reads and creates blueprints for use in set design and event planning. 7. Works with other departments (such as Music Department) to coordinate and manage events and productions. 8. Provides and assembles equipment for performances, events, rehearsals, conferences, and classes including electrical, lighting, sound, and other stage equipment 9. Ensures that facilities are locked and secure after performances. 10. Trains performers to safely use various pieces of sets. Personally functions as a team member in the execution of day-to-day production events at Richardson and Taplin Auditoriums. These events in a typical academic year include approximately 159 performances (some of which include same day rehearsals), 228 rehearsals (rehearsals on non-performance days), 28 recording sessions, and 21 special events. This Production Technician must be experienced in all aspects of theatrical/concert hall production techniques and is responsible for insuring that all productions are presented to the public in their most artistic and aesthetically pleasing form. The specific production techniques include: 1. General stagecraft including stage set-ups, stage management, set design, set construction, set decoration and on-stage safety. 2. This position takes the lead in the most complex lighting design, wiring, lighting fixture hanging and focusing, color techniques, and lighting control board programming and operation. The lighting design may for instance accent certain performers while not detracting from or blinding the other performers. The lighting must be pleasing to both the performers and the general audience. Productions are enhanced with special lighting, colors and strobe lights to give the production the proper atmosphere. 3. Acoustics. Changes the acoustics of the auditorium to meet the specific needs of each production event. Acoustics are changed by adjusting the position of the hanging sound reflector, by properly locating the rear stage acoustical shells and by adjusting such things as draperies. Uses specialized equipment such as the orchestra pit elevator, the acoustical reflector, specialized lighting equipment, specialized rigging, fog machines, projectors, and mirror balls in Richardson Auditorium and lighting equipment and other specialized equipment in Taplin Auditorium as needed.Job Function: Maintenance and ServiceGrade: MTR 030Standard Hours: 40Eligible for Overtime: YesJob Requirements
Essential Qualifications: Position Requires: A. The Production Technicianl should have good experience in the principles and techniques of theater production, stage management, sound reinforcement, and stage craft; sound safety procedures and practices as applied to theater and staging production; variety of construction trades such as carpentry, electronics, welding, electrical, painting; safety requirements necessary in the operation of stage equipment such as draperies, curtains, counterweight systems, rigging, lighting, and sound equipment. B. This Production Technician should possess a solid background in lighting design, lighting board programming and operation needed for the production of all forms of live musical performance. C. The Production Technician should be familiar with theater electrical and safety codes. D. The Production Technician should possess excellent inter-personal skills including creativity, diplomacy and problem solving ability to work effectively with other staff members, World-Class performing artists, Princeton University Music and Math Department Professors, students and the general public, often under high-stress conditions. E. The Production Technician must have a strong sense of personal responsibility to honor critical time-commitments, supervise safety compliance and maintain a high level of professionalism as representative of the University to performers and the public alike. The production technician must be able to perform the following physical activities: 1. Stand or walk 2 - 4 hours at one time, up to 6 -8 hours per day; 2. Sit for less than 2 hours during an 8 hour day, except a technician may sit for up to 6 hours during an 8 hour day when operating a lighting console; 3. Lift or carry up to 70 pounds occasionally (less than 33% of the workday); 4. Lift or carry up to 25 pounds frequently (34 - 66% of the workday); 5. Lift up to 70 pounds to waist height and up to 25 pounds in a range of motions from floor to overhead: 6. Frequently use hands for simple grasping, fine manipulation, pushing or pulling (34- 66% of the workday); 7. Occasionally squat, reach overhead, kneel, knee stand, lie down, crawl, lift overhead, push or pull with forces up to100 pounds (less than 33% of the work day); 8. Frequently bend, climb ladders or stairs, push or pull with forces up to 50 pounds; (34 - 66% of the work day); 9. Work in a variety of temperatures and environmental conditions, including hot or humid attic spaces, or occasionally shoveling snow; 10. Possess ability to work at heights, full range of body motions and physical agility, and ability to maintain balance.Education Required: High School or Equivalent
