Science Writer and Media Specialist

The American Institute of Physics (AIP) is seeking an individual who will write about research news in physics and related sciences and communicate it in layperson's terms to an audience of mass media professionals, including journalists at print, broadcast, and Internet outlets. The successful candidate will serve as one of the science writers and media relations professionals in the AIP Media & Government Relations Division. The individual will write a large number of news releases, news items, and feature stories on a diverse range of science topics, interact extensively with journalists at a variety of news media, and help coordinate and operate newsrooms for AIP Member Society meetings and other projects. The science writer will also perform some story research for the Discoveries & Breakthroughs (DBIS) television program.
REQUIREMENTS


A bachelor's degree in a branch of STEM (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) with relevant experience in writing or communications, or a communications/writing/public relations degree with 3+ years experience in newsroom journalism, science writing, and/or media relations is desirable.

Good writing, self-editing skills, news judgment and the ability to produce completed high quality written work in a reasonably independent fashion on deadline is required. The capacity to understand physics/science topics in journals and scientific meetings and to communicate them verbally and in writing to an audience of laypersons as well as the desire and skill to network and interact effectively with journalists in broadcast, Internet, and print media is required. The ability to multi-task between several active projects and to work in a team environment is required.
