Publicist
The position of Publicist is responsible for strategic media relations, special events and community outreach activities that develop public understanding and support around the BSO’s artistic and educational contributions to the community. The publicist we seek is a strong communicator with excellent writing abilities, solid media relationships in the regional area, and a proven track record in story development and media placement. The ideal candidate is a motivated and highly organized manager of multiple projects/priorities and possesses grace under pressure. Overall support for the Office of Public Relations and Community Affairs, which advances the BSO’s mission, vision and reputation as one of the nation’s leading orchestras.
Responsibilities Include:
Planning and execution of media relations tactics to support the BSO’s core Classical and SuperPops, Family, and Soulful Symphony concert series, along with other organizational priorities
Researching and writing of press releases, fact sheets, pressroom copy and other materials
Cultivating and educating key media and community members about BSO programs and contributions
Collaborating with the Director of PR at the BSO at Strathmore to develop and pitch stories to regional media
Scheduling and staffing television and photography crews
Coordinating press and community events to include annual season announcement, media cultivation affairs, and grassroots outreach activities to build community presence and support for the BSO
Fulfilling requests for BSO images, information, and interviews in a timely manner
Organizing and maintaining the BSO’s database and archives
Other duties as assigned
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in communications or a similar field
Preference will be given to those who have demonstrated success in this area, and have experience working in a nonprofit and/or performing arts organization
Ability to work efficiently and independently on many concurrent tasks in an exciting environment
Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
Commitment to perfection and uncompromising attention to detail
Classical/contemporary musical background and/or interest is desirable

Additional Background on the BSO
The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is internationally recognized as having achieved a preeminent place among the world's most important orchestras. Acclaimed for its uncompromising pursuit of artistic excellence, the Baltimore Symphony has attracted a devoted national and international following while maintaining deep bonds throughout the Maryland community through innovative education and community outreach initiatives.
Organized in 1916, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra is the only major American orchestra originally established as a branch of the municipal government. Reorganized as a private institution in 1942, it maintains close relationships with the governments and communities of the city and surrounding counties, as well as with the State of Maryland.
The BSO currently has a staff of 60 employees, with most of these employees being based at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore. The staff supports the Orchestra, also based out of the Meyerhoff. The Orchestra is made up of 90 musicians that bring a wealth of musical knowledge and professionalism to the symphony.
