General Assignment Reporter

The Monterey County Herald (CA) welcomes applications for a General Assignment. We are a 34,000 circulation daily newspaper located on California's Central Coast serving the diverse communities of Monterey County.

The General Assignment Reporter is responsible for covering a wide range of topics in Monterey County, including breaking police and fire stories, government meetings, feature articles, enterprise articles in public safety and other areas, and other articles as assigned.

The reporter is expected to develop and maintain sources and contacts in the community so that they can develop their own story ideas. Duties include producing daily and weekend stories and longer-term pieces, including a mix of hard news, features and profiles. The GA reporter reports to the city desk.
REQUIREMENTS
The job requires:

- Solid understanding of newsgathering and
writing skills

- At least two years of consistent high-
performance work experience

- Demonstrated competency in the following
essential functions:
*Developing timely, relevant local news
and features about local people,
community, events, and problems.
* Writing clear, concise, accurate,
balanced copy on a timely basis.
* Effective interviewing of a wide variety
of individuals.
