EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY RELATIONS-
Executive Director of Development and Community Relations, Orange County
KCET-TV (PBS)
Founded in 1964, KCET-TV is the West Coast flagship station, and a leader of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) network, with viewers throughout Southern and Central California. KCET has an average weekly audience of 2.6 million households. Carried on nearly 150 cable systems in 11 counties, the station covers a region reaching from San Luis Obispo to San Diego, from Palm Springs to the Pacific Coast. KCET has operated and served the Orange County community for more than 40 years. It covers the largest geographical area with the most diverse population of any public TV station in the United States.
The primary purpose of Community Television of Southern California (KCET) is to provide public television programming to local communities in Southern and Central California. KCET makes a targeted, pro-active effort to promote on-air programs to specific communities of interest - linking viewers to resources and information which can improve their quality of life. KCET also acts as a media partner with community leaders and organizations to address pertinent issues.
KCET broadcasts more than 162 hours of programming each week, including critically acclaimed and time-honored PBS staples such as Masterpiece Theatre, NOVA, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, Frontline, Antiques Roadshow and American Experience. Its acclaimed children’s schedule, PBS Kids, includes Sesame Street, Barney and Teletubbies. KCET augments PBS programming with its own locally produced programs and other acquisitions.
KCET is donor-supported community television. It exists because of the generosity and loyalty of more than 175,000 members whose annual gifts support KCET’s vital programs and community services. In FY 2004, nearly one third of the station’s $64 million in operating revenues came from these supporters. In comparison, only about 6% of the revenues were federal funds.
In addition to its important group of annual $40 members, KCET depends upon a core of faithful supporters whose annual commitment exceeds that of basic membership. These major donors join KCET’s Leadership Circle and Legacy Circle as major investors in KCET through significant unrestricted donations as well as planned gifts in wills and trusts. KCET also enjoys unrestricted support from corporations and foundations throughout Southern and Central California. These organizations and others nationwide also provide restricted funding for various KCET productions and projects.
KCET is governed by a volunteer board of directors made up of a cross section of business and community leadership. The station’s 175 person staff is headed by President & CEO, Al Jerome.
