Director of Public Relations

AHIMA has an immediate need for a Director of Public Relations to Increase external visibility and influence for AHIMA, its members, the health information management (HIM) profession, and Association products and services through:
Developing and managing AHIMA’s overall media relations plan
Extending AHIMA’s ability to influence legislative and regulatory issuesProviding visibility for AHIMA products and services with the mediaDeveloping and managing AHIMA’s image marketing programSeeking opportunities for Association staff, volunteer leaders and members to speak and publish and matching individuals to the requirements of the opportunityProviding input into decisions about sponsorships, endorsements, and other relationships with external organizations and managing selected relationships
Promoting careers in health information managementThese functions are done to expand the health care industry and public’s recognition of the health information management profession and its issues to: 1) promote employment opportunities for members, 2) enhance the position of the Association among target constituent groups, 3) advance the Association’s vision, mission and strategic goals.

REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate for this position will possess the following experience and skills:At least seven years of progressive public relations experienceThe ability to develop and write goal-driven strategic communications plans from a “big picture” perspective
Extensive experience in business and journalistic writing, including: strategic communications plans; byline articles and columns; press releases; letters to the editor, “pitch” letters; and white papersExperience in cultivating and maintaining professional relations with trade, industry and consumer mediaThe ability to develop materials that will help generate publicity for the AssociationExtensive experience in editing written materials of various kindsKnowledge of related technology, including: contact management software; database software; html editors; and Microsoft Office Suite softwareKnowledge and experience in image development
Presentation skills and ability to coach othersAbility to advise top management and Board of Directors on issues related to public and media relationsSkills in prioritizing a multitude of responsibilitiesSkills in researching and finding information necessary to the pursuit of press coverageMedia training skills
Minimum of Bachelors degree in marketing, communications, or related fieldAbility to work collaboratively to achieve team goals and outcomesSmart and happy disposition
