Top worldwide producer of ultra-fine fibers for filtration media used in clean rooms air filters.POSITION SUMMARYJohns Manville is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Product Developmental Chemist / Engineer with familiarity of production processes used for non woven (fiberglass & polymeric) products. This position is based at Waterville, OH after an initial training period at JMTC in Littleton, CO. In this position, the person would work with existing team of product development engineers, scientists, project managers, and marketing managers to develop new and next generation of non woven mat products and processes. This position requires keeping internal & external customers in the line of sight, and timely execution of individual responsibilities toward the time to market goals. Additionally, this position requires supervision of a group. Travel to customers, development partners, and pertinent trade shows may be required.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIESDevelop new products and the enabling manufacturing processes. Troubleshoot existing products and processes using sound scientific, statistical principals and 6-Sigma tools.
Be responsible for generating new product and process improvement ideas that add to JM’s overall differentiation in marketplace through technology. Be responsible for presenting and justifying the development / project execution to senior technical and business management.
Hands-on working in lab and plant environment.
Follow the stagegate (phased development) process for project management.Portfolio manage the set of projects through established benefit / effort decision matrix and product costing.
Be responsible for proactively leveraging the best practices and resources within JM, and external knowledge base in the field of Non-Woven products and applications, Materials Science, Chemistry and manufacturing technology towards efficient product development.Fully assess the current state of patents in the pertinent product development areas. Be responsible for pro-actively filing the documents / reports associated with protection of intellectual property.Publish periodic internal progress reports on the projects. Be responsible for organizing project / portfolio / technical initiatives review meetings.
Be responsible for maintaining an external network consisting of testing labs, independent research institutions, etc. which could be leveraged to complement the internal resources towards efficient product development and meeting the goals of time to market, time to volume, etc.
Direct the activities of group of chemist, chemical engineers and technicians. Be responsible for staffing up the group against the strategic needs of the businesses. Be responsible for fostering and maintaining ‘Safety First’ culture and work environment.
Must be willing to support manufacturing or business unit activities as necessary, to provide technical support for chemical raw material changes.QUALIFICATIONSPh.D. in Chemistry, Polymer Science or Engineering ( or related discipline)Must have 5-10 years in Non Woven industry with emphasis on wet laid technology.
Proven leadership qualities, mentor, consensus builder. Effective communication skills.
Knowledge of Non Woven mat products, marketplace, competitive technologies, equipment suppliers.Hand on experience with equipment used in non-woven processes.Familiarity with routing analytical characterization techniques.Experience in buying and installing lab instruments.
Familiarity with routine literature / patent search methods.Experience with typical non woven processes (wet laid, air laid, needling, carding, hydroentanglement, etc.) would be a must.Plant / Production / Scale Up experience.Experienced in public presentations.Knowledge and experience of statistical analysis & six-sigma tools.Ability to work with plants, vendors and external customers.Ability to select, buy and install lab equipment. Ability to set up a pilot lab.Formulation experience would be a plus.Proof of technical successful project completion and patent publications.
