PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:
This position is responsible for providing value-added services to MEM’s policyholders through the development and delivery of timely and effective safety training programs that prevent and/or reduce workplace injuries. This position will also perform some loss prevention services for policyholders, producers, and other MEM departments.
Essential Functions:
Perform job duties in accordance with MEM’s vision, mission and values.
Training
Organize and develop training curriculum utilizing adult education principles. Training curriculum to encompass all safety topics effecting MEM policyholders including: construction, general industries and mining topics. Programs should be in compliance and/or in accordance with OSHA, MSA, NIOSH, NSC, and other sources/standards.
Select or develop teaching aids such as training handbooks, demonstration models, multi-media visual aids, computer tutorials, and reference works.
Independently administer, coordinate and perform all functions of MEM Loss Prevention training events including: marketing and communication, contracting, scheduling, enrollment, pre- and post- course assignments, set up, AV support, introductions, presentation, evaluations and recognition.
Analyze training needs and develop new training programs or modify existing programs to incorporate best practices, technology upgrades, and federal and state regulatory changes.
Work collaboratively with MEM managers, Loss Prevention staff and other MEM departments to write and provide technical resource and training information.
Serve as a resource for to policyholders, agents, and MEM staff on questions involving various safety issues, insurance issues and Missouri Workers Compensation laws.
Keep current on developments in training, instructional methodologies, technology enhancements and safety regulations by auditing and attending seminars, forums, trainings and meetings, to ensure effective and efficient delivery of services.
Evaluate effectiveness of individual training sessions as well as the training program as a whole and modify and adjust programs as necessary to achieve desired results.
Complete administrative, control and expense reports; plan individual workload and time management activities.
Loss Prevention Services
Conduct surveys of prospective and new business accounts for the purpose of gathering risk related data and evaluating loss potential for underwriting and loss prevention purposes. Develop opinions, conclusions and objectives based on current loss prevention standards and creates reports and correspondence for distribution to underwriting and policyholders. Use sophisticated loss prevention techniques, systems or equipment for conducting surveys.
Consult with policyholders, producers, claims, and underwriting to develop solutions to reduce and/or eliminate claims.
Offer recommendations to policyholders to improve their loss prevention efforts.
Apply knowledge of Missouri workers' compensation laws to affect account's claim management systems.
Keep informed and knowledgeable of the company's policies on Underwriting, Loss Prevention, Claims, and Legal.
Perform other related duties as required or requested.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:
Education:
A bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related safety field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Coursework on adult education preferred.
Designations/Certifications:
CSP or CIH preferred, or working towards designation.
Current OSHA Outreach Trainer Certification preferred.
Current National Safety Council Certification as a CPR and DDC 4 Trainer preferred.
Experience:
Minimum of five years of professional level work experience in the area of safety or industrial hygiene. Prefer at least three years experience in safety training duties.
Skills:
Possess excellent technical writing abilities.
Working knowledge of, and ability to apply, safety laws and standards including OSHA and Missouri law including workers compensation law.
Able to work independently to meet required deadlines.
Able to engage in extensive travel with 50% travel and overnight stays.
Able to attend additional skill developing seminars within the U.S.
Able to use Microsoft Office programs, Lotus Notes, Internet and other media software.
Able to investigate safety training topics via Internet, library or other resources.
Able to effectively lead workshops and seminars on a variety of safety topics.
Able to communicate ideas and information verbally, both one-on-one and in larger groups, in a manner that is clear and concise.
Able to present prepared information that holds customers' interest and addresses their needs and concerns.
Able to adjust presentation styles to correspond to the audience being addressed.
Able to fully explain engineering recommendations and sell to the policyholder as a necessary loss prevention measure.
Able to present written information in a clear, concise and organized manner.
Able to write technical information so that it can be understood by non-technical audiences.
Able to demonstrate training abilities as part of the interview process.
Language Proficiency:
Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently, using correct grammar, sentence structure, spelling, and vocabulary appropriate to the position. Must speak clearly in person and over the telephone. Must possess excellent oral and written communications skills.
Physical Demands:
A person in this position will sit, stand, and drive for extended periods of time. Must be able to physically set up a training room to include moving chairs, tables, setting up a projector and laptop, loading/unloading training materials out of a vehicle, etc. Must be able to handle papers, files, and equipment appropriate to the position. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to independently visit and travel to other MEM offices or meeting locations.
