Position Environment:The Underwriting Department performs all activities on behalf of Covansys’ government and commercial clients which result in policy issuance and maintenance of flood insurance policies written under the National Flood Insurance Program. These underwriting activities include processing, underwriting of the flood risk, policy issuance, policy maintenance, and policy disposition. The relationship with the producing insurance agent is maintained and administered. Customer service is provided to the WYO customer, agent producer of the flood insurance risk as well as the insured and other interested parties.Scope of this Position:The position of Underwriting Supervisor is directly responsible for the policy administration functions. The position is responsible for establishing consistency and coordination with the underwriting and customer service unit in providing support to the insurance producers writing the flood insurance policy. The Underwriting Supervisor must assure that contractual service levels are met, and that the rules and regulations of the National Flood Insurance Program are complied with, as well as ensuring that the team meets individual performance standards. This position is challenged to satisfy the unique requirements of both governmental and various commercial clients, while establishing consistency in department policies and practices and application of Program rules, and achieving a 35% or higher margin for the company.Principal Accountabilities:
Direct supervision and workload management of up to 10 exempt underwriting associates and 2 non-exempt support positions, together performing the policy administration functions .Assists Manager in establishing policies and procedures. Responsible for training, moral, and ongoing professional development of all direct reports. Assuring that contractual service levels are met:
o 98% New Business
o 97% Endorsements
o 98% Renewals
o 97% Cancellations Tracking performance of associates against established service levels:
o Prepare individual performance reports weekly
o Prepare comprehensive team performance report for Manager weekly
o Prepare PTO report monthly
o Ensure workloads are handled across the team daily – reassigning work as necessary to meet performance standards Supervisory to production expectations are 70%/30%
o 70% of the supervisor’s time will be spent directing the team and monitoring performance
o 30% of the supervisor’s time will be spent on production: Complex policy issues Agent/insured issues Congressional complaints/resolution Complex claim re-rates Interpretation of program rules
o Work with Bureau underwriters to clarify rules in writing
o Work with FEMA underwriters to clarify rules in writing
o Work with agencies to explain program rules Supervises coordination with Claims associates on rating elements in the event of a loss. Support and encourage behavior that supports the mission and vision of the flood processing team.Qualifications:
Expert knowledge of NFIP rules and regulations 5 + years property and casualty underwriting experience Seasoned trainer and/or experience writing business procedures Skilled at establishing measurable objectives Strong communication skills, oral and written Supervisory or mentoring experience College degree and/or professional designations a plus
