Senior Underwriter, Commercial Lines

RESPONSIBILITIES: 1. Within delegated authority levels and company guidelines, accepts, rejects or modifies new and renewal business for all commercial lines to ensure a profitable commercial book of business. Prices business according to company underwriting and pricing guidelines within individual underwriting authority limits, and ensures standards for timeliness are met. Assists inexperienced underwriters in the handling of high hazard or more complex accounts. 2. Markets the Company products through agent contacts to achieve company growth and profitability targets. Develops on-going relationships with agents, monitors agency growth, profitability and quality of submissions, and keeps agent up-to-date with underwriting and/or product changes. 3. Is assigned to handle, and manages the most complex books of business to maximize profitability and growth. Reviews loss activity (frequency, severity) for each agent in assigned territory. Considers mix of business, loss ratios by line of business, fit of business with company guidelines. Identifies problems or patterns that might predict problems and works with agents to correct. May change policy deductibles, increase premium, non-renew policy. May recommend constraints on business the agent may submit or recommend that an agent be suspended. 4. Acquires reinsurance as needed. Contacts facultative reinsurers and negotiates according to company standards for larger risks by contacting reinsurers with the best price and coverage within delegated authority limits.

REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION: BA/BS degree or equivalent in a directly related insurance position.

EXPERIENCE: 6 or more years of current direct property and casualty underwriting experience with a commercial carrier. In-depth knowledge of all commercial lines products. Expert in underwriting all commercial lines exposures for key lines of business (general liability, auto, property and inland marine). Able to handle more complex accounts with some guidance from team leader. Completion of some CPCU/ARM or underwriting classes and actively working toward professional designation preferred. Previous rating and computer experience helpful.
