Senior C/L Underwriter
The Ohio Casualty Insurance Company is hiring for a Senior C/L Underwriter in their St. Louis, MO office, to profitably underwrite assigned Commercial Lines business within designated territory and delegated authority in accordance with Company policies and objectives.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Selects, underwrites, and prices risks within delegated authority.
Maintains underwriting quality standards, and ensures customer satisfaction and office profitability.
Compiles, develops, and verifies information necessary for rendering an underwriting decision.
Determines applicant eligibility for company programs.
Investigates and analyzes prior loss history, evaluating hazards and exposures and analyzing financial reports and other pertinent data necessary for correctly classifying risks.
Establishes prices which correspond to the degree of risk.
Recommends alternative coverage options when appropriate.
Negotiates prices with agencies when necessary.
Completes all necessary documentation relating to the final underwriting decisions.
Maintains a working knowledge of company and industry rate, form, and coverage changes.
Completes projects relative to the profitability of the underwriting book.
Meets company service standards.
Develops and maintains effective agency relationships.
Identifies and develops new or enhanced business opportunities.
Visits agents to enhance business relationships, improve renewal retention, and create new business opportunities.
In conjunction with Marketing Representative, educates agencies about Ohio Casualty’s products, services, automation, and underwriting standards as well as sales and cross-selling techniques.
Facilitates efforts to establish goals and action plans which enhance agency performance.
Assists in training, developing, and mentoring Commercial Lines underwriting staff.
Supervises staff in some regional offices, as needed.
Provides commercial lines expertise to staff in other functional areas.
Assists with quality control for associate underwriters and underwriters through policy referrals or implementation of company quality control program.
Works with underwriting manager to identify and implement workflow improvements.
Creates and delivers product and technical presentations to agents and associates, as required.
REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
Five years experience directly underwriting assigned agencies for commercial lines
Comprehensive knowledge of pricing and coverages for assigned lines(s) of business
Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills
Demonstrated interpersonal skills
Demonstrated negotiation skills in a business environment
Demonstrated analytical and decision-making skills in business situations requiring the evaluation of risks
Ability to create and access information using a personal computer
Knowledge of the social, political, economic, and demonstrated characteristics of an assigned territory
Knowledge of state and federal laws impacting the insurance industry
Demonstrated file documentation skills which clearly detail an underwriting decision and comply with company and legal mandates
Demonstrated coaching skills CPCU, IIA, AU or CIC courses, preferred
