Programmer Trainee
The programmer trainee writes, modifies, and tests computer programs thoroughly and performs duties with direction and supervision. Incumbent must achieve familiarity with at least one existing corporate system in order to handle basic problem analysis and resolution. Moreover, the trainee is expected to successfully assume progressively responsible duties, culminating in the position of programmer at the end of a two-year development plan.
This is an entry-level position within our information services department that is designed for recent college graduates holding a bachelor degree in computer science who have little to no actual work experience as a programmer. The position is also designed to accommodate applicants who have a bachelor degree in another discipline in combination with extensive insurance experience and an aptitude in analytical thinking and problem solving.
Candidates must hold a minimum of a bachelor degree in computer science or another directly related field, OR an associate degree in computer science or another directly related field plus internship experience, OR a bachelor degree and extensive experience in the insurance industry with a demonstrated aptitude for analytical thinking and problem solving. Applicants with MIS education will be considered only if they have an exceptional GPA and provide references from a successful internship. We look for candidates who have completed coursework that includes introductory and advanced instruction and/or application in programming, systems analysis and design, and database design. Coursework in Web services (e.g., XML, SOAP) and Web site design are beneficial.
Candidates must possess the ability to establish and nurture positive working relationships with peers, management, and business partners; proficient written and verbal communications skills; demonstrated abilities to conceptualize, analyze, and resolve problems within required time frames; demonstrated experience in setting schedules and meeting deadlines; capacity to learn new technologies; and demonstrated judgment, problem solving, organizational, and time management skills. A strong customer service orientation and an eye for detail are also required.
Flexible schedules are available to work standard 38.5 hours a week, Monday through Friday.
