Industrial Hygiene and Safety Specialist
(Full-time, Exempt)

The Department of Environmental Health and Safety at Stanford University is seeking an Industrial Hygiene and Safety Specialist to focus on occupational safety programs in the University’s operations and research.

Primary Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Manager of the Occupational Health & Safety Program, this position has the primary responsibility and duty to assist in developing and managing safety issues on campus, while providing support to Industrial Hygiene group.

·Assist in the development, implementation, and management of safety programs including confined space, forklift, lockout/tagout, fall protection, and machine guarding.

·Assist in reviewing plans for new or modified facilities, equipment, and processes that have associate health and safety hazards; oversee hazardous material issues related to construction activities.

·Provide technical consultation and advice on all aspects of occupational safety to faculty, staff, and students throughout the University; including problem-solving, follow-up guidance, and assistance toward implementation.

·Support IH staff in noise assessments, specialized ergonomic assessments plans review, and other industrial hygiene issues as needed.

·Assist in the review of worker compensation claimants’ work histories to evaluate information related to claims, investigate accidents, perform job hazard analyses and assist departments with writing safety standard operating procedures.

·Assist in the development of, and then conduct training programs for management, supervisors, and employees relative to potential safety and health hazards, applicable regulatory requirements, latest control techniques and general occupational safety and health issues.

·Assist in the implementation of Stanford’s ergonomic program

·Provide on-call support services for emergency response as needed.

·Perform other related duties as requested by the supervisor or EH&S management.
REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications:
Education: Four-year degree or equivalent in a health and safety-related discipline required; advanced degree preferred. Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist status desired. 2-3 years of directly applicable experience required, 3-5 years preferred.

·Demonstrated skill and experience with occupational safety and health principles and applications.

·Working knowledge and experience in conducting effective occupational safety and health inspections/audits. Ability to evaluate survey findings, analyze data and make appropriate recommendations.

·Demonstrated experience and ability to devise and implement control measures for chemical, physical, biological, ergonomic, environmental and occupational safety and health stress factors.

·Knowledge of Federal, State, and local health & safety laws, codes, regulations, guidelines and current technology that supports compliance.

·Understanding of both the regulations pertaining to hazardous material storage and the ability to learn and practice how Stanford complies with those regulatory requirements.

·Ability to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing with all levels of faculty, staff, students and representatives of regulatory agencies.

·Ability to interact effectively with a diverse population and support the University’s affirmative action program.

·Willingness and ability to comply with governmental regulations and University and departmental policies regarding health and safety, and observe and support good health and safety practices.
