Position Summary:
The Director of Product Development is responsible for providing leadership to and development of the Product Development staff to achieve unit/division/corporate goals as it relates to researching, developing, maintaining and delivering products and services to meet overall marketing and market segment goals.
This includes the development of new product proposals, management of the product development pipeline (a Stage-Gate process), development and implementation of new products and modifications to existing products. The Director will work in concert with the market segment management, health management and provider relations teams to create product strategies that support each of these functions. This accountability applies across all market segments and all states in which Wellmark, Inc., does business.
Job Accountabilities:
1. Responsible for the leadership and development of the Product Development staff by providing continuous coaching and feedback on performance. Includes recruiting & hiring, performance management, establishing performance standards and goal setting. 2. Collaborate with Marketing & External Relations leadership team to help identify, create and implement the overall Wellmark marketing strategy. Includes the development of a segment-level product strategy and associated value propositions. 3. Develop, implement and direct an overall segment product plan, including completion of annual portfolio analysis (overall and by segment) for assigned health and ancillary products. Prepare quarterly segment product portfolio updates. Monitor and evaluate product performance – including recommending the addition, expansion or discontinuation of products, along with projected financial impact. Identify and initiate any corrective action needed which may include managing cross-functional resources outside of the team: legal, contracting, finance, provider, promotion & distribution. Prepare reports and share status updates with Divisional Leadership and Senior Leadership as appropriate.

REQUIREMENTS
The ideal candidate will possess:
1. Bachelors degree in Business or Health Administration 2. Ten-plus years of position related experience. 3. Product development including market segment or product management; innovation management; health insurance; people management. 4. Demonstrated product portfolio management and product strategy development. 5. Demonstrated effective leadership and team building skills, including strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication. 6. Excellent negotiation skills. 7. Excellent presentation skills. 8. Strong analytical, technical, problem solving & decision making skills. 9. Proven time management and multiple task management capabilities. 10. Project management & budget planning abilities. 11. Innovation & strategic thinking skills. 12. PC skills (Word, Excel) 13. Demonstrated ability to comprehend and process complex concepts.
