Fiber Optic Technician II (11281)

To splice, activate, maintain and document the performance of the coaxial and fiber optic outside plant system. This position is also responsible for testing, adjusting, proofing, trouble-shooting and repairing the outside plant through the optical and RF equipment to termination points for BHN and FCC performance standards.
Reports to the Fiber Splicing Supervisor. Interfaces with engineering, construction field maintenance and telecommunications departments with BHN. Has limited contact with outside utility companies, governmental agencies and BHN contractors

Performs the splicing, activation and proofing of the fiber optic transmission and receive equipment.
Repair, maintain and adjust fiber optic transmission and receive equipment.
Assists in installing and testing of Head-End fiber optic transmission equipment.
Prepares and revises maintenance records and maps as they pertain to the fiber optic network.
Responsible for the implementation of field work for BHN telecommunications and projects.
Measures and records performance characteristics of outside plant with electronic equipment such as OTDR’s, fiber fusion splicers and related equipment, laser power meters, RF meters, VOM meters.
Document, analyze, trouble-shoot and repair the performance of optical components of outside plant
Installs, activates, and proofs reverse path performance through optical equipment to the HUB and Head-End
Performs quality control and assists coordinating contract fiber splicing resources.
Recognize, enforce and exhibit good safety practices, procedures, rules and regulations in performing all field tasks.
Performs other duties as assigned and stand-by duties during non-business hours as required
REQUIREMENTS
High school diploma or the equivalent as well as basic and advanced system electronics training and/or experience. Minimum of one year of experience in a fiber splicing position is preferred plus experience in coaxial splicing, activation and trouble-shooting. Ability to read and interpret CATV strand routes and design maps required. Excellent mechanical aptitude, as well as the ability to follow instructions, climb poles, handle ladders and work outdoors is necessary. Requires good communication skills and a valid Florida Driver’s License. Must be able to distinguish colors.

Experience Required:
Working knowledge of OTDR’s, fiber fusion splicer, laser power meters, TDR’s, RF & Volt-OHM meters is required. Able to read, interpret, communicate and implement operating manuals for the operation of electronic equipment systems and components for highly specialize electronic transmission systems and test equipment. The ability to document accurately as-built data and other information with attention to detail is essential.
