ELECTRICAL UTILITY SYSTEMS PRECONSTRUCTION LEADER
ELECTRICAL UTILITY SYSTEMS PRECONSTRUCTION LEADER
We are a quality company with diverse capabilities and visionary leadership. We are a success story, a financial point of strength and the mission here is to reduce demand on ownership, not repair a broken company.
We need a broadly experienced utility systems pre-construction person who has estimating skills, management skills and public skills. These are generally different skill sets but we need all of them in the same person. The job involves technical review and estimating, sales relationship and business development, proposal development and presentation, contract negotiation and we would love to find a person who could move from these responsibilities into a division manager’s position.
The kind of work we do centers on utility distribution constructions. Because of our location a lot of the available work is URD, but we do overhead work and primary services. The traditional client is the Utility Companies, but we would like to establish relationships with private developers, industrial campus owners, institutions (college campus, hospital campus) the military and any other business entities that need the construction of the outside electrical services and distribution systems.
The person who will succeed in this job has experience estimating the typical line and underground work that utilities subcontract to deliver services to residential areas. There is typical pole and transformer work and lots of URD. We are not constructing 345kV overhead or underground oil filled transmission systems. The company would be effective on building out a buss architecture around a college campus and connecting up unit substations and configuring a spot network. We could do primary work for a variety of industries that are distributing medium voltage on a campus.
A primary responsibility of this job is estimating the work, but we would like to find a professional with social skills that can expand existing business relationships and is effective in relationship development and networking to expand existing relationships. The Holy Grail is an electrical utility systems pre-construction person with an imagination who can take our capabilities into diverse market places. Being friendly, service oriented, straightforward and easy to deal with goes a long way.
Secondary responsibilities are administrative. Building an estimating system and filing systems for jobs that provides easy access and can be counted on for consistency, completeness, and uniformity of format and standards is the evolutionary path we are taking. Evolving great proposals with flexible modules that can be used as the basis for new proposals, making sure that all contracts are properly filed and that operations has a grip on non-traditional terms and conditions in contracts may be part of this work. Helping in a general office management role is part of it. We have strong field operations, but everything goes more smoothly when the office has great filing systems and standards for managing all input, estimating files, field inputs related to specific jobs, contract information, and files for all job correspondence that are uniform and easily accessible in a standard format. The person who does this job will have to have good general computer skills and good organizational skills.
At this point this business segment is five to seven million dollars worth of revenue in our fifty million dollars + of annual sales. For the right person, this is the opportunity to grow a strong division. The Market would allow expansion to multiples of our present size. We have strong leaders in specialized divisions and we are a company that provides strong incentives to leadership and are happy and proud to pay big bonus compensation to our producers that deliver growth and profit.
SOME BASIC STUFF ABOUT US
We are a midsized ($50 – 70 million annually) privately owned national contractor operating out of multiple locations in Florida. This particular group is in a nice area of central Florida where housing is affordable and family living is good. The founders of the company have been in the electrical construction business for a long time, but the southeastern location has been home for the past15 years.
Pride for us is intelligent differentiation and differentiation is our exceptionally strong and specialized operating divisions. We do utility systems construction, we do commercial construction, we have a big emergency service department, we do contract maintenance, fast response small construction, we do airport specialty work, and we do communications work.
Management is visionary. We assess all the elements that impact our markets and formulate a response before we are forced to react to changes in our markets. Leadership is constantly upgrading and refining business plans. For an employee, this means that we will lead. If you do your part, we will find profitable business to pursue. As simple as this is, being flexible and getting ahead of changes are things few self-performing constructors do well. We are the poster children for prior proper planning.
We have run an ethical, high-performance business. We pay the vendors, so we have access to all. It is funny to hear a contractor refer to the select vendors they do business with, when the reality is more like those vendors that were dumb enough to allow the firm to get so deeply indebted to them that continuing to work with that firm is the lesser of several evils.
Our executives come from the trades. We are electricians and engineers. Management style is really compatible with distinguished professionals. You will see excellence in planning and real leadership. Your responsibilities will be clearly defined. Your goals will be clearly set forth, along with parameters for performance from which there will be bonus compensation. You will be given the best tools to do the work, you will be given capable staff, and you will then be expected to manage your business as an independent professional. I know that is a very long-winded way of saying that we do not micromanage and are good at professional delegation, but being free to manage your affairs is only exciting if you are being handed realistic business by management with realistic expectations and backed up property in terms of technology, manpower, tools and resources. Anybody can hand out a disaster and leave you to sink or swim with inadequate resources. That seems to be all to common in the electrical construction industry and we are not the company foisting loosing propositions on our staff.
Our transmission and utility specialty is unique and so is the staff member we seek. We are often doing this work as a prime and we self-perform the civil portion using our own fleet. With some 400 pieces of equipment, we handle the excavation, lifting, setting and general dirtwork involved in installing underground distribution, power vaults, installing transformer components and trenching in duct banks. We work as many local projects as possible, but will reach out regionally as necessary.
The last element that a real business person in this profession should consider is that we are willing to look at innovative compensation plans that include merit pay for profit, and for business relationship development. We are open minded and willing to listen to your input if the plan addresses everybody’s needs.
Our plans include controlled growth and investing your career with us means career growth. We are committed to providing enough business expansion to offer career progression to our loyal professionals.
