Responsibilities
70% - Systems Administration – Monitors and tunes UNIX Systems to achieve optimum performance levels. Includes proactive monitoring of servers, administering to functioning of peripherals, scheduling, trouble shooting, applying fixes and general performance tuning. Ensures workstation/server integrity by evaluating, implementing, and managing appropriate software & hardware solutions. Performs and schedules software installations and upgrades to operating systems in accordance with established IT policies & procedures. Oversees hardware maintenance functions and supports media management through internal methods or through off-site storage and retrieval procedures. Responds to off-hour trouble calls correcting problems where possible. Has knowledge of shells scripting and troubleshoots other users shell scripts.
20% - General Administration & Support – Develops and promotes standard operating procedures. Conducts routine hardware and software audits to ensure compliance with established standards, policies and configuration guidelines. Develops and maintains a comprehensive operating system hardware and software database/library of supporting documentation. Produces reports on activities, make suggestions for improvements in the system, and provides technical expertise to all other members of the SA staff as well as the user community. Maintains communications with many software and hardware vendors.
10% - Administrative – As highest level support, acts as lead technical person in major problem resolution. Prepares status reports for his/her management. Performs analysis and documents study results. Researches new technologies in UNIX environment and reports suitability for BGE. Acts as mentor for all other SA’s.
REQUIREMENTS
Education, Experience, and Skills
Person must have excellent logic and problem solving skills and must be able to communicate well – both verbally and in written form. Person must have a college degree – preferably in Computer Sciences - and 4-6 years experience in Systems Administration working on a UNIX environment. Must be extremely technically oriented.
