Job Description:
The Sr. IT eCommerce Architect will be primarily focused on Design and Architecture fostering Scalability, Availability, Functionality, Performance and Best Practices on specific portions of systems as required as changes are needed to current solutions. IT eCommerce Architects will work in a team with other Architects and Senior Engineers of various specialties and will be responsible for evaluation, design and implementation of all eCommerce systems, platforms, and devices. Areas of specialty include of servers/hardware, Operating systems, backup systems, storage systems, load distribution devices, networking, application platforms, and emerging technologies, as well as capacity planning, and systems documentation. IT eCommerce Architects will also be responsible for working with high level development and planning staff working toward solutions to new systems or changing needs.
Core Responsibilities:
Review all designs and implementations of new systems for Expedia Inc.
Work closely with Development, Systems Engineering, Operations, and Security teams as subject area expert resources for architectures and solutions that will facilitate the needs of Expedia.
Responsible for designing large scale, highly available, scaleable, production and lab systems.
Consult with development and other IT teams to ensure the technical goals of and designs are consistent with the needs of the stakeholders.
Facilitate implementation of systems changes and improvements.
Act as senior escalation point for their area of expertise in problem management or break fix scenarios
Be involved in developing, modifying and executing company procedures
Work on issues where analysis of situations or data requires in-depth knowledge of a given technology.
Create and maintain the documentation of all systems and associated pieces under their purview.
Work with other architecture, engineering and operational team members to communicate design goals and facilitate the understanding of Expedia systems and our designs.
Communicate system changes, architectures, and implementations to all levels in the organization as required.
Additional tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, IT, or equivalent work experience.
9 plus years of demonstrated Systems Design experience; emphasis towards production support of a high capacity mission-critical web serving environment with significant Internet components.
Excellent knowledge and hands-on experience with various server hardware vendors and platforms.
Solid security fundamentals as they pertain to networking. Knowledge of operating systems and application servers is a plus.
Must have ability to quickly drive problems and issues to resolution and handle multiple complex issues or processes simultaneously
Experience with enterprise storage systems.
Experience in data center operations required
Strong interpersonal, analytical, customer service skills
Ability to design and deliver training to various levels of experience in a staff.
Ability to contribute as a technical resource for others.
Communicates to all levels in the organization and serves as primary point of contact to customers.
Must be able to manage relationships with Vendors and other 3rd parties
Technical Qualifications:
Detailed understanding and of hardware, operating systems (Windows, Linux, and / or other UNIX OS’s) as it pertains to designing for performance, scalability reliably and cost effectiveness.
Expertise in system engineering, administration, configuration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, preventative maintenance, and security procedures. Microsoft operating and Unix/Linux operating systems
Network architecture including experience with load balancing equipment, switches, and routers.
5 years Hardware systems design, enterprise storage and disk subsystems, cluster management, troubleshooting, and hardware replacement, including experience with distributed web farms, production monitoring, backup systems, and SAN based storage.
IP communication and packet structure, with focus on HTTP protocol and experience with network protocol analyzers is required
Understanding of internet standards such as -DNS, FTP, SSH, HTML, XML, JDBC, SNMP and other protocols
Web and application server expertise (tomcat, IIS, Apache, weblogic, etc) including administration, configuration, troubleshooting, performance tuning, preventative maintenance, and security procedures.
Expertise in large scale systems management and monitoring systems.
Network, application, and data security best practices.
Databases – setup, configuration and basic understanding of database terms and methodologies
Use of monitoring and troubleshooting utilities to effectively diagnose problems.
Experience with relevant scripting or programming languages is a plus (perl, VB, JavaScript, Python, C, Java, etc).
