Network Systems Specialist

The Network Systems Specialist is responsible for daily operations support for local and wide area networks, including installation, testing, maintenance, and customization of network systems. Employees oversee and coordinate general network activities and provide operational support for information systems required to provide on-line information. Install and troubleshoots a wide variety of network hardware and software components, i.e., routers, intelligent hubs, bridges, CSU/DSU, switches, file servers and Web servers, gateway and domain servers and physical network cabling. Functions in an on-call capacity for response to hardware/software systems repair needs. Supervises and trains support staff, interns and Support Technicians.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:

•Receive customer action requests from the support dispatcher and ticket queues. Escalate problems as necessary.

•Install terminate and diagram associated network cabling including Cat 5e, Cat 6 as well as single and multi-mode fiber in accordance with manufacturer and industry standards.

•Implement router, switch and private switch configurations as directed by the Network Architect.

•Allocate IP space and maintain IP Inventory as per established policies as well as reclaim un-used IP space for re-distribution.

•Develops and implements disaster recovery plan for diverse server networks.

•Configures VLAN, Firewalls, Switches and Routers to include port configuration, subnetting / supernetting IOS configuration and firewall rule-sets.

•Provide detailed documentation of activities and issues through trouble ticket system.

•Perform port upgrades and downgrades as required.

•Monitor for network performance and suggest improvements and technology.

•Maintain cleanliness and safety of the data center environment as well as the integrity and neatness of network cabling installations as per established policies and industry standards.
REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

•Excellent communication skills as well as previous direct customer support experience is required

•In depth working knowledge of Subnetting and supernetting principles.

•The ability to work first, second and third shift is required.

•Experience in operation and configuration of various Operating Systems and software tools. To include Windows, Free BSD, Linux, Unix and CentOS.

•Working knowledge of broadcast domains and 543 rules for proper broadcast domain implementation.

•The ability to read and understand information and ideas presented in writing as well as network diagrams and topologies and technical documentation.

•Familiarity with RTG and EIGRP as well as static and dynamic routes.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Education and/or equivalent years of experience.
A minimum of 3 year hands-on technical experience is required.
