Learning System Manager

Harvey Mudd College (HMC), a member of The Claremont Colleges, is a highly selective private liberal arts college of engineering, science and mathematics, located 35 miles east of Los Angeles in the village of Claremont.

Reporting to the CIO and Director of Computing and Information Services, the Learning System Manager will provide primary support for the Sakai Collaborative Learning Environment (CLE). Manage, administer, integrate, configure, customize and maintain the Sakai system for Harvey Mudd College and other member institutions of The Claremont Colleges.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Project Management. Meet with HMC faculty and Claremont IT staffs to coordinate the development and use of the Sakai CLE by The Claremont Colleges. Conduct periodic evaluations of how well Sakai meets the needs of The Claremont Colleges. Present results and guide group discussions to create consensus on recommendations for improvement.

Administration. Administer Claremont College student, faculty and staff accounts and privileges on the Sakai CLE system. Insure that new course sites are created and configured based on registration data in Jenzabar CX and PeopleSoft student systems.

System Management. Install, configure, customize, and monitor performance of the Sakai CLE and its components. Download, install and evaluate upgrades and enhancements. Resolve problems and issues. Modify and develop new management capabilities as required.

System Integration. Integrate new tools and academic data resources, such as eRes (the Library's electronic reserves system) into the Sakai CLE and other systems as appropriate.

Meet with HMC faculty and staff to discover new and innovative applications and enhancements of Sakai. Implement new features and procedures as required.

Monitor developments at the Sakai Foundation and at other institutions using the Sakai CLE. Work cooperatively on goals of mutual benefit.

Assist with other open source projects.

Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or to be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

Knowledge and experience with the Java programming language. Ability to debug large and complex Java programs desirable.

Experience with open source tools and open source software development preferred.

Experience with Linux in a clustered environment desirable.

Experience with Sakai Collaborative Learning Environment desirable.

Strong communication skills to lead cooperative large group meetings of faculty, and IT staff groups.

Requires a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or a related field and a minimum of three years programming experience or any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must be able to work with faculty, students and staff of varying computing proficiency in a collegial manner. Must be able to define realistic, specific goals and objectives and prioritize them. Provide high-quality customer services. Analyze situations accurately and adopt an effective course of action. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Use tact, patience and courtesy in all interactions. Meet schedules and timelines and work independently with little direction.

Salary is dependent upon qualifications with a minimum of $4,583 per month. This is a full-time, 12 months per year, benefits-eligible, exempt position. Usual schedule is Monday through Friday. An excellent benefits package is available.
