Data Center Operations Manager

Nature and Scope of Position
The Information Technology organization in the National Ignition Facility (NIF) Programs Directorate has an opening for an operations manager supporting information technology data center operations and service delivery.

The candidate will have a strong understanding of data center operations and IT operations support in medium to large scale 24x7 user environments.

This position will report to the NIF Chief Information Officer.

Essential Duties
* Responsible for service availability, environment change and configuration management, asset and vendor management, incident and problem management
* Oversee daily operations; interface and coordinate with infrastructure and operations teams in prioritizing data center work; plan, track and manage all operations activities
* Work with infrastructure, applications teams, project management and facilities management to define proper maintenance schedules, identify system upgrades, and define system enhancements to improve efficiency and reliability of all systems in and supporting the data centers
* Develop, track, maintain and provide weekly metrics reports on data center performance, operations and work
* Develop and implement strategies and plans to support 24x7 operations
* In conjunction with application operations, create and follow change order management procedures and maintenance schedules
* Develop, implement, enforce policies and procedures and oversee all reports and documentation relating to data center operations
* Work as part of the change control committee to enforce standards in the production environment
* Perform Data Center capacity management and planning. Analyze existing processes and make recommendations for the improvement and growth of the data center
* Develop maintenance and refresh schedules for operations equipment
* Implement and maintain asset management for data center hardware, software, vendor maintenance and equipment
* Develop business case justifications and cost/benefit analyses for Operations spending and initiatives
* Develop and maintain contingency management procedures
* Develop and maintain work and safety procedures for data center activities
* Produce status reports and provide input for financial analysis and projections
* Produce metrics representing NIF IT operations performance
* Participate in project budget, staffing and procurement activities.
* Coordinating requirements and solutions with multiple IT project managers in a complex and dynamic environment
* Manage definition of and produce/own project plan defining deliverables, timing, budget, scope, risk and schedule for aspects of data center activities
* Utilize organizational and analytical skills in finding solutions to complex problems
* Utilize interpersonal skills in a multi-disciplinary team environment, with diverse user communities and several levels of management
* Apply written, verbal communication, and organizational skills necessary for a technical environment

REQUIREMENTS
Essential Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
* BS degree in Computer Science, Engineering or scientific discipline or equivalent combination of knowledge and experience.
* 7 + years management experience in a medium to large IT data center environment
* 7+ years working in an IT data center or IT Operations capacity
* ITIL certification; demonstrated performance to application of and adherence to ITIL procedures
* Strong knowledge of data center electrical systems (UPS, PDU, generators, etc.), knowledge of HVAC and fire-suppression systems, knowledge of networking and data communications fundamentals and project management skills. Excellent communication skills - both written and verbal, excellent customer-service orientation
