The purpose of this position is to independently function and operate medical equipment to record sleep/wake physiology.



The Sleep Therapist is responsible for performing and planning sleep studies and evaluating outcomes of care.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, direct patient care, patient/family education, and provision and therapeutic treatments. In addition, the Sleep Technician provides clinical management, control, and diagnostic evaluation consistent with the prescribed treatment plan and the policies and procedures of the Department of Cardio/Respiratory Services. The Sleep Therapist performs care consistent with the age specific and developmental needs of patients.



Efficient application of recording devices to the patient.

Cleaning / sterilization equipment

Monitoring of polysomnograms to ensure the integrity of diagnostic data collection through proper calibration and monitoring throughout the procedure

Recognition of sleep pathology when it occurs in the laboratory and respond with appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety.

Prepare for patient arrival by setting up equipment to be used, gathering necessary patient information, activating the montage to be utilized, preparing audio and video equipment as appropriate, and gathering necessary patient questionnaires.

Set up CPAP and BiPAP in accordance with established protocols.

Perform multiple sleep latency tests, record and review adult polysomnograms and produce reports.

Ability and knowledge to follow all standard operating procedures at all times for patient studies and pre and post study requirements.

Document interventions

Evaluate clinical outcomes

Monitor patient status and response to therapy

Assures physical safety conditions are observed in all patient related situations.

Responsible for clean and tidy work area.

Cooperative and flexible in 24 hour staffing and scheduling requirements in order to meet the needs of the department.

Participates in hospital or departmental quality assurance/performance improvement activities

REQUIREMENTS


Job Qualifications Include:

Graduate of accredited school of professional respiratory therapy, credentialed as a Registered Polysomnographic Technician, or experienced Sleep Lab Technician (pass RPSGT exam within one year).

Continuing education in sleep diagnostics required per state regulations.

Previous clinical experience preferred.

PSG experience required

Current Texas licensure as a Respiratory Care Practitioner, Current RPSGT, or experienced Sleep Lab Technician

Demonstrated experience in related clinical area or demonstrated ability to acquire new skills.

Clinically proficient in polysomnographs, demonstrating knowledge of the developmental needs of the Young adult (18 and over), adult, and geriatric patients.
