Shift Supervisor- Short Term Emergency Services
Girls and Boys Town, the original Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, is a leader in the treatment and care of abused, abandoned and neglected girls and boys. Throughout its nearly 90-year history, the nonprofit, nonsectarian organization has provided these children with a safe, caring, loving environment where they gain confidence to get better and learn skills to become productive citizens. Girls and Boys Town alumni have gone on to become successful in all facets of life.
Nationally Girls and Boys Town cares for thousands of children and families each year from our programs located at 19 Sites in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Girls and Boys Town's National Headquarters and largest child-care facility are located at the world-famous, historic Village of Boys Town in Nebraska.
Here at Girls and Boys Town of Southern California, our mission is to Change the Way that America Cares for Her Children and Families. We do this one child, and one family, at a time. We believe the best way to nurture any child’s development, especially those whose lives have been torn apart by abuse, abandonment and neglect, is to provide a safe, caring, loving, family-style environment where kids can gain confidence to get better and learn skills to become productive citizens.
In 2005, Girls and Boys Town of Southern California provided help, healing and hope to 1,286 children and 261 families through Residential Services, Short-Term Residential Services, and Family Based Services. Another 61,011 children and families in the State of California were indirectly assisted through the Girls and Boys Town National Hotline, and through outreach and professional training programs.
Of the more than 13,000 calls the Los Angeles Department of Children and Family Services receives each month almost half require immediate action to ensure the safety of the children involved. The challenge for the County is to find a safe place for these children to stay that meets their urgent physical and emotional needs.
While a safe and more-permanent solution is being sought for these kids in crisis, they can find safe haven at our two Emergency Shelter and Assessment Centers. Our Long Beach Emergency Shelter and Assessment center opened in 1993 and provides programs for 11- to17-year-old boys in crisis – runaways, homeless, court-placed or abused children. Our Price Family Campus in Los Angeles is an emergency shelter and assessment center for girls, ages 11- to 17-years of age. These are the only private, nonprofit short-term facilities licensed by California and contracted by the County of Los Angeles.
Our shelters are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and can serve up to 28 children at one time. In 2003, these shelters helped 380 children. With respect to ethnicity, 42 percent were African-American; 26 percent Latino; 14 percent Caucasian; 18 percent Asian, Pacific Islander or multi-ethnic. The average age at admission was 14 years.
Where our kids go when they leave our program is a good indicator of how our model of care can be successful in a short amount of time. The majority – nearly 73 percent of our children - move to less restrictive placements after their stay in one of our Emergency Shelter and Assessment Centers. Three months after departure, 88 percent of our children and youth were attending school, 91 percent have not been arrested and 82 percent reported no problems with alcohol and drug use.
Girls and Boys Town is honored to announce the upcoming opening of their third shelter, the Girls and Boys Town of Southern California, Lennar Campus. This campus is set to open on December 27, 2006 and will offer many opportunities for professionals to grow and development within our mission.
