Position Description
Senior Psychiatric Social Workers supervise the daily operation of a mental health program and participate in program planning, design and evaluation. A Senior Psychiatric Social Worker has fist-line supervisory responsibilities for a multi-disciplinary team including hiring, training and evaluation of staff. Responsibilities also include research and special projects; preparing and writing a variety of correspondence and reports; and performing other related duties as assigned.

The Department
Behavioral Health Care Services provides a full range of accessible alcohol and other drugs and mental health services throughout Alameda County. Services are provided directly by county staff, private providers and through contract with community based organizations.

This continues to be a very dynamic and promising period in the development of Alameda Countyıs Behavioral Health Care Services. Since 1995, we have integrated the services of the many private hospitals serving Medi-Care beneficiaries with the services of our comprehensive system of care. Since 1997, this Department has brought together hundreds of private practitioners and scores of both county-operated and contracted agencies into an even more comprehensive system of care. Now, we are also able to serve people with a diverse range of crises and impairments related to most mental disorders in addition to providing services to seriously and persistently mentally ill adults and seriously disturbed children.

Our network of services currently consists of over 400 individual practitioners, more than 90 community-based agencies, 20 hospitals and other institutions. Clients and their family members can now find geographically accessible services throughout all parts of the County. Services are available in all languages and are provided by a multicultural and multidisciplinary panel of service providers, many of whom have developed specialties that meet the often unique needs of our clientele. Examples of Duties: Supervises a multi-disciplinary staff of three or more clinicians; confers with staff regularly regarding techniques used, case progress, and related matters for the purpose of promoting and evaluating professional development and assuring quality of care, as well as reviewing work in progress. Holds regular case conferences with clinicians for supervision and consultation; reviews psychiatric case records and selects cases for discussion; supervises staff in assessing social, emotional and economic causes of problem behavior and mental or emotional disorders and in developing and modifying treatment and approves alternative plans, termination or transfer of cases; supervises consultation activities of supervisees; is responsible for assignment and reassignment of supervisees' caseload. Coordinates the assignment of cases, conducts staff meetings and provides training; schedules staff to provide for clinic coverage; evaluates work performance; assists in disciplinary proceedings. Personally maintains a small caseload or handles some of the more complex cases; performs a variety of direct clinical, diagnostic, treatment, and outreach services. Performs special projects related to program planning, design, and development; community outreach and public information duties; inter-agency liaison activities; and research projects. Provides input into the budget process and performs office management functions.

Qualifications
Education: Possession of a master's degree from an accredited school of social work with field placement in a medical or psychiatric setting.

Experience: The equivalent of three years of post masters' experience as a Psychiatric Social Worker in a psychiatric setting or other clinical setting emphasizing the mental health needs of clients with psychiatric problems. (Note: Previous experience involving lead or supervisory responsibility is desirable.)

License: Possession of a valid LCSW license in the State of California
