The outpatient RN provides care in the outpatient setting directed toward meeting both the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient. Is a resource person and teacher. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Utilizes initiative and strives to maintain steady level of productivity. Is a self starter. Is compatible and supportive; is a team player.

Major Functions/Responsibilities:
Coordinates and supervises care.
Performance reflects knowledge in all areas of care specific to Outpatient Surgery.
Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
Utilizes initiative; strives to maintain steady level of productivity; a self starter; compatible and supportive; a team player.
Has knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration, based on the patient and patient’s clinical condition.
Gives patient care and evaluates effectiveness of that care. Able to perform head-to-toe assessment on all patients and reassessment, as needed pre and post operatively. This includes pediatric, geriatric and general population.
Has ability to formulate and individualize plan of care, as indicated, and evaluates for effectiveness.
Teaches patient’s based on identified learning needs, and evaluates effectiveness of learning. Includes family in teaching plan.
Able to identify physical symptoms and changes; takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
Has knowledge of cardiac monitoring and can identify dysrhythmias.
Communicates clearly and appropriately with the patient, co-workers, physicians, and other departments to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; practices good guest relations.
Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within the shift.
Maintains a safe, secure environment for the patient and their family.

Education and Training:

Holds current RN license, current BLS/ACLS certification.

Experience and Job Knowledge:

Previous med/surg experience desirable. 2-4 weeks on the job training in the department. PACU experience preferred. PACU on the job training based on experience.
Must successfully complete criminal background check as required by the State of Minnesota.
Staff members who have regular contact with patients must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the patients served on his or her unit. Staff members must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. In addition, each staff member must be able to assess and interpret data relating to the patient’s status in order to identify the patient’s age specific needs.

Initiative and Judgement:

Organizes, implements, supervises, and evaluates patient care while manages nursing activities to reflect due consideration for patient’s needs and the needs of the department and staff. Flexibility is maintained. Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases, and surgical conditions, the care required. Must have good judgment.

Mental Demands:

Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.

Physical Demands:

Physical Activity: Able to stand for long periods. Must walk, bend, stretch, and push and pull patients.
Working Conditions: Works in relatively clean environment. Routine exposure to blood and body fluids.
Hazards or Risks: Routine exposure to hazardous/infectious waste and equipment. May injure self by lifting, slipping or needle sticks.
