Position Summary:

Under general direction, provides professional occupational therapy interventions in caring for neonatal through geriatric patients.

Position Responsibilities and Duties:

A.Essential Functions:
1.Performs thorough occupational therapy evaluations. Interprets and integrates evaluation findings. This evaluation may be administered independently or under referral from a physician.
2.Develops individualized treatment plans based on patient needs identified during initial evaluation or re-evaluations.
3.Provides patient, family/significant other, and patient care team education.
4.Collaborates with other health care team members in coordinating overall patient care program.
5.Monitors patient’s response to intervention and modifies treatment as indicated to attain goals.
6.Supervises and directs care provided by certified occupational therapy assistants.
7.Develops appropriate home or community programming to maintain and enhance the performance of the patients in their own environment.
8.Documents results of patient’s evaluation, treatment, follow-up, and termination of services.
9.Maintains service-related records.

B.Other Related Functions:
10.Develops and provides inservice education to members of the patient care team and to the community.
11.Supervises patient treatment conducted by COTAs and Level I and II fieldwork students and supervises volunteers.
12.Maintains adequate inventory of supplies necessary to carry out patient treatment objectives.
13.Assists in implementation of quality improvement programs.
14.Cleans and maintains equipment.
15.Performs related work as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Physical Requirements- Medium work is exerting up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly to move objects.

Physical Activity- Stooping is bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist which is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires full use of the lower extremities and back muscles. Kneeling is bending legs at knee to come to rest on knee or knees; crouching as in bending the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine. Reaching is extending hands and arms in any direction. Pushing is using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward, or outward. Lifting is raising objects from a lower to higher position or moving objects from position to position. This factor is important if it occurs to a considerable degree and requires the substantial use of the upper extremities and back muscles. Fingering is picking, pinching, typing or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling. Grasping is applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Feeling is perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly fingertips as when conducting tactile discrimination tests with patients. Talking is expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word. Those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly or quickly. Hearing is the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make fine discriminations in sound, such as when making fine adjustments on machined parts.

Visual Acuity- Records information onto patient records.

Qualifications:

Graduate of an accredited occupational therapy program. Successful completion of a minimum of six months Level II Fieldwork experience; successful completion of AOTA Certification Examination for Occupational Therapist, Registered.

License Registration/ Certification:

Current AOTA certification; licensed as an occupational therapist by the Iowa Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy Examiners, (or eligibility for licensing) Professional competency as a general practitioner of occupational therapy as defined by AOTA through successful completion of the AOTA certification of state licensure process; demonstrated independence in the use of varied treatment approaches with neonatal through geriatric ages; may be developing advanced level competencies in one or more aspects of occupational therapy.
Possession of a current valid driver's license and must maintain eligibility for coverage under Mary Greeley Medical Center's insurance policy.

Working Conditions:

The worker is subject to both environmental conditions: activities occur inside and outside.
The worker is subject to hazards: such as proximity to moving mechanical parts and exposure to chemicals.

Reports to: Rehab & Wellness Supervisor
Supervises: COTA's, Level I and II fieldwork students and volunteers
