GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT
Understands the maintenance of sterility in the OR and care of sterile electrodes and accessories. Understands the effects of anesthetic agents on the electrical activity being recorded and the accompanying effects of the anesthetic agents on the additional parameters being monitored.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Calibrates and adjusts EEG and EP instruments and selects appropriate instrument settings and electrode montages for each procedure.2. Applies appropriate recording and stimulating electrodes to the skin surface and subdermally with needle electrodes to appropriate body areas determined by the procedure to be performed. Directs the surgeon in the application of sterile electrodes and stimulating devices in the surgical field and along the neuroaxis.3. Trouble shoots potential OR electrical interference and instrument malfunction to ascertain reliability and reproducibility of electrical signals during procedure.4. Abstracts relevant information from the patient's clinical records and obtains additional information by questioning the patient and the surgeon when necessary. Informs the patient of the monitoring procedure. File patient data in the computer terminal.5. Assesses the baseline electrical activity with regard to the patient's clinical history and current status and reports the findings to the anesthesiologists and the surgeon. Continuously monitors the electrical activity throughout the procedure notifying the anesthesiologists and surgeon of any significant or questionable change caused by positioning manipulation, temperature, HR, BP, O2 saturation, drugs, shunts, retractors, dye injection or any other events physiological or mechanical that could affect the patient's baseline stability.6. Acquaints residents in Anesthesia with electroneurogiagnostic equipment and helps to instruct them in the various types of signals and their importance.7. Maintains equipment in good working order, notifying supervisor of problems or needed repairs.
REQUIREMENTS
QUALIFICATIONS
Five years experience. R. EEG T. or board eligible. Formal training preferred.SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
Maturity, the ability to establish good rapport with patients, staff, and the medical and general community. The capacity to severely ill patients and their families requiring a high level of tact and empathy.Independent judgment and initiative. Neurodiagnostic testing involves direct physical contact with patients, which must be down in such a way as to preserve the patient's rights. Also working directly with confidential information such as patient and personnel records which requires the use of discretion.High degree of leadership, organizational, and teaching talents. High technical skills with knowledge of diverse testing methods.
