Family Support Worker

Duties: Establish and maintain a trusting relationship with at-risk families by providing regular contact through home visits.Apply working knowledge of parent-child interaction, child development, and the dynamics of child abuse and neglect to teach positive parenting skills and non-violent management techniques, reduce family stress, and meet dependency needs of parents; help parents learn problem-solving and coping skills and to connect to appropriate community agencies and resources.Work with parents in making and attending appointments with doctors, social service agencies, etc.Act as a liaison between families and other community agencies/resources.Assist family to develop goals, objectives and activities to meet their needs, using a family-centered, strengths-based approach.Meet with supervisor regularly to evaluate family status and to discuss strategies for improving outcomes.Maintain familiarity and knowledge of community resources and use these appropriately to meet family needs.Record observations and activities that occurred while with families.Assist families to perform developmental screening.Assist family with paperwork needed in application for programs such as medical or financial assistance.Conduct screening interviews based on the HRI as requested with families during pre- and post-natal period.Participate in regular staff meetings, case conferences, in-service training and other meetings.Interface with hospitals, doctors’ offices, county Health Department, and other medical and social service agencies in processing referrals to and from partner agencies.Make presentations to other organizations regarding the Healthy Start Program.Attend training workshops and conferences for professional development to keep updated on new developments in the field.May supervise volunteers assigned to assist the Family Support Worker.

REQUIREMENTS
One-year experience working with young children and families in a social service setting, including jobs in day care and homemaking; or an associate’s degree in a social or behavioral science; or an equivalent combination of experience and training.Bachelor’s degree preferred.Valid driver’s license with a driving record that permits coverage under the agency’s corporate auto liability policy.Must provide an automobile as a condition of employment.Personal automobile liability insurance.
