Director of Medical Affairs
Columbia MedCom Group is a successful medical communications firm. The company is comprised of two subsidiaries, Medicalliance and INNOVIA Education Institute. Medicalliance’s mission is to provide a full range of medical marketing services while INNOVIA focuses on developing, managing and accrediting educational programs for physicians and other healthcare professionals.
As the Director of Medical Affairs (Medical Director) you will be responsible for providing scientific and clinical expertise and perspective to support the educational and promotional needs of our partners in the pharmaceutical industry. This includes providing oversight in areas of business development, strategic planning, and senior account management/supervision.
Role & Responsibilities:
Business Development & Strategic Planning:
The Medical Director will provide leverage for Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) and other networks to establish new business for Medicalliance. Additionally this position will be responsible for the development of new strategic and tactical initiatives and plans to include:
•Develop target prospects and new opportunities based on market landscape and current network connections within the pharmaceutical industry
•Develop strategies and tactical plans for current and prospecting clients
•Develop innovative tactical initiatives for current and prospecting clients
•Provide science & strategy to the other peer Directors and Executives
•Build network of KOLs to support new business development for Medicalliance
•Develop relationships with higher level brand team members (Brand Directors, Medical Directors, Brand Leaders, etc) and acquire new opportunities for future business
•Partner with leadership teams in Medicalliance as well as Columbia MedCom Group to build strategic corporate development plans to include the development and presentation of pitches to current and prospecting clients
Scientific Management:
The Medical Director will be responsible for the management, development, and coordination of Manager’s of Scientific Affairs group (MSA) and Account Management team with regards to organizational goals, productivity, and resource planning to include the following:
•Provide direction and oversight to the Scientific Affairs team
•Assign & coordinate the work of MSAs and AMSAs to include providing mentoring and development as needed in areas of science, medicine and business, to include client relations.
•Set performance goals and expectations and provide feedback verbally as well as through written reviews
•Allocate appropriate scientific resources to implementation teams/client accounts
•Allocate appropriate scientific resources for Medicalliance’s new business development as well as CMCG’s corporate development
•Plan & acquire resources to meet implementation needs based on annual business projections
•Evaluate productivity of the Scientific Affairs team and continuously foster efficient and productive processes.
•Assure scientific accuracy and appropriateness of programs/projects by providing timely and appropriate scientific support to account teams (Account Mgrs & Account Coordinators)
The Medical Director will be responsible for the building and executing processes for the Scientific Affairs Team to include:
•Managing the flow of scientific & account specific information to all areas of Medicalliance
•Planning and executing strategy meetings
•Developing mechanisms and processes to establish and maintain relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (“KOLs” - Doctors and other top level heath care professionals) on behalf of clients and our company
•Providing vision and a plan for KOL management
•Providing input and direction to the Scientific Affairs team on marketing strategies and appropriate integration of science and marketing to include sales aspects (non-commission based).
REQUIREMENTS
•Master’s Degree in Business Management, Marketing, Public Health or relative area. MD, PhD, PharmD (or equivalent) highly preferred however candidates with lesser credentials will be considered with experience strengths listed below.
•5+ years of experience in pharmaceutical marketing, or publication planning or medical education/communications. Account Management experience with oversight of Scientific Affairs teams (MSLs - Managers, Scientific Liaisons) also highly preferred.
•Must have Industry knowledge and skill in the following:
oUnderstanding of overall pharmaceutical marketing – marketing and sales teams, product life cycles, medical affairs teams, etc.
oOrganizational skills – set and manage internal structures, processes, and resource re-allocation as necessary
oManagerial and Leadership skills – set goals and expectations, motivate staff and create efficiencies and productivity
oStrategic skills – provide vision, plans, and goals for the Scientific Affairs team and associated Account Management teams.
