Christiana Care Health System is in search of two experienced bariatric surgeons for our Bariatric Center of Excellence.Christiana Care is one of the largest, private, not-for-profit teaching affiliated health systems in the United States.Based in Wilmington, Delaware, Christiana Care is the region’s leading healthcare provider, serving Delaware and neighboring areas of Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New Jersey. Christiana Care has in excess of 1,100 beds in its two hospitals, is a major regional heart center and has the only Level I trauma services on the East Coast corridor between Philadelphia and Baltimore.Christiana Care has a National Cancer Institute designated Community Clinical Oncology Program. A free standing general surgical residency program graduates five chief residents per year.Bariatric Surgery Program Background Information:Christiana Care established a Weight Management Program in 1997. The program is multi-disciplinary and includes nutrition, fitness, and life style changes for long term outcomes. Christiana Care’s Bariatric Surgery Program was established in October 2001 under the leadership of the Chair, Surgery. The synergy between weight management and our Bariatric Surgery Program has resulted in a comprehensive multi-disciplinary approach with pathways established for pre-surgery, surgery, and post surgery.Christiana Care has established a bariatric patient care unit with specially trained nurses to provide the highest quality care for bariatric patients. Two specially designed operating suites with a dedicated bariatric anaesthesia team are in place.Since the program’s inception, approximately 1,200 patients have been selected for bariatric surgery procedures. Over 400 surgical procedures were done in 2005.According to recent market research for our region, it is projected that there will be a 17% annual growth rate in bariatric procedures.Christiana Care is currently in the second phase of the application process for accreditation as a Center of Excellence for Bariatric Surgery.Candidate Qualifications:The physician surgeons who will lead our Bariatric Surgery Program must be committed to meet all Center of Excellence standards.In order to achieve the highest standard quality outcomes, Christiana Care will enter into a mutually exclusive agreement with the selected physicians who will provide all bariatric surgical services for Christiana Care.In turn, physicians will agree to exclusively perform all of their bariatric surgical procedures at Christiana Care’s Bariatric Center of Excellence. Options include a variety of practice models to include free standing private practice, joining an existing private practice or full time hospital employee.Interested candidates must have completed a fellowship in Bariatric Surgery, or have documented extensive experience in laparoscopic bariatric surgery. Candidates must also demonstrate the interpersonal skills necessary to be successful in a multi-disciplinary team environment.
