The Advisory Board is currently accepting applications for an associate editor with the Clinical Strategy Watch, a biweekly, online publication that provides news and analysis to approximately 35,000 individuals at Clinical Advisory Board and Health Care Advisory Board member institutions.
The Watch associate editor will budget, assign, and edit stories of varying length and analytical rigor, from short news summaries and journal abstracts to in-depth original reporting and news analysis. He or she will supervise the publication’s staff writer, work closely with the Advisory.com News Division’s managing editor and other members of the Watch editorial team, and interact with the Clinical Advisory Board research team.
Responsibilities include:
Act as a direct manager for one writer, coaching him/her through the writing process, including structuring arguments, creating effective graphics, enhancing clarity of writing, and adopting appropriate tone
Conduct exhaustive research via Factiva, websites, clinical journals, and major newspapers to identify content worthy of publication every two weeks
Edit stories and write 25 percent of them
Drive production of biweekly publication from research through final document compilation
Serve as primary liaison between CAB research and Watch team and work to identify research appropriate for publication
Upload and regularly audit online content for quality maintenance
Respond to member inquiries regarding previous, ongoing, and upcoming publications
Work with department leaders on program strategy
REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should possess:
Superior strength in written communication; writing must be extremely sharp and concise
Acute intellectual curiosity and an interest in clinical terrain
Strong analytical reasoning and critical thinking skills; ability to comprehend and communicate complex concepts
Acute “news sense,” as demonstrated through the ability to clip pertinent articles and to quickly identify and summarize an article’s main point
Ability to “breathe life” (and occasional wit) into coverage
Ability to thrive under intense deadline pressure; highly efficient
Superior staff management capabilities
Top-notch process management skills
Acute sense of member concerns and interests
Strong team, leadership, and coaching skills
Tolerance for ambiguity and shifts in direction
