Public Information Officer
The Oregon Department of Transportation was established in 1969 to provide a safe, efficient transportation system that supports economic opportunity and livable communities for Oregonians. ODOT develops programs related to Oregon’s system of highways, roads, and bridges; railways; public transportation services; transportation safety programs; driver and vehicle licensing; and motor carrier regulation.
PUBLIC INFORMATION OFFICER
The Public Information Officer plans and develops public affairs and public information programs for ODOT's Region 4. This involves helping to set region policy; providing public affairs counsel to management; creating and managing the implementation of special programs and projects designed to develop a more knowledgeable constituency; and representing and speaking for the region and administrator. This position is located in Bend.
As a Public Information Officer you will:
• As a member of the Region 4 Management Team, provide public voice and participate in policymaking, based on in-depth knowledge of department and region regulations, strategies, operating policies, plans, programs and projects.
• Advise region administrator and top Region and Agency management of public impact of various actions.
• Provide counsel on handling negative situations sensitively.
• Advise on news media and community relations.
• Plan strategies for presentation of region and agency activities.
• Develop, monitor and coordinate public and employee information programs.
• Design and implement campaigns to achieve specific public affairs goals.
• Produce or oversee production of news releases, speeches, videotapes, newsletters, brochures, ads, public service announcements and other forms of communication.
• Respond to various legislative or organizational inquiries through letters, calls and public speaking to explain agency programs, plans, policies and projects.
REQUIREMENTS
Position Qualifications include:
• A Bachelor's Degree in Business or Public Administration, Public Relations, Marketing the Behavioral or Social Sciences or related degree, and five years professional level experience in Public Relations or Affairs, OR
• Eight years experience directly related to the position under recruitment; five of the eight years must have been at the professional level.
• The employee in this position will be required to use a state vehicle to conduct business; you must possess and maintain a current, unrestricted, valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
