ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS The Los Angeles County Office of Public Safety (LACOPS) is responsible for law enforcement activities at County facilities located throughout the County. These facilities include County parks, hospitals, clinics, and various County buildings. Positions allocable to this class are assigned to the Office of Public Safety and are characterized by participation in a formal law enforcement training program involving both classroom and practical instruction as approved by the State of California on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
Incumbents must possess the mental ability to assimilate classroom instruction covering a wide variety of academic and technical subjects as well as physical skill and coordination to become proficient in firearm and weaponless defense techniques. Examples of duties and responsibilities of an Officer Trainee include:
Receives instruction in the interpretation and application of laws contained in various State codes and local ordinances such as the Penal Code, Vehicle, Welfare and Institutions Code and Los Angeles County ordinances;
Participates in a firearms training course; learns proper safety procedures, care and use of small arms as well as department regulations and legal limitations upon firearm use;
Participates in monitoring special events at command posts, or assists in providing traffic and crowd control or suppressing disturbances;
Responds to questions from visitors to County facilities and may direct them accordingly, and provides general information and assistance to the public to ensure their safety and to foster good public relations;
Assists in providing first aid or other emergency assistance;
Assists in patrolling all or an assigned portion of County facilities to ensure that only authorized personnel are permitted access to closed or restricted areas by detaining unidentified or unauthorized individuals;
Monitors remote audio and/or visual systems to detect activities that may threaten the safety or security of County buildings, their contents, or employees or visitors and their personal property.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
Graduation from high school or its equivalent. Successful completion of the basic law enforcement training program approved by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training, which includes an extensive background investigation of the individual's physical, mental and moral fitness for the position will be required during the 12-monthprobationary period in this classification.
Physical Class: 4 - Arduous:
Involves frequent heavy lifting over 25 pounds, often combined with bending, twisting, or working on irregular surfaces; and occasionally requires extraordinary physical activity.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must be in good general physical condition, free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the position of Police Officer Trainee, Los Angeles County Police. Although there are no minimum or maximum height requirements, the height-weight relationship of each applicant must either (1) fall within the ranges in the following table or (2) if the applicant's height is not included on the table, be found to be acceptable after individual evaluation. Height measurements are made without shoes. Weight measurements are made without shoes and coat. Applicants whose height falls between any of the measurements shown on the table must meet the weight requirements of the lower hieght. Individuals who do not meet the standard shall have their body fat measured. Female candidates whose body fat is 33% or less may be qualified. Male candidates whose body fat is 22% or less may be qualified.
Licenses: A valid California Class C Driver License is required to perform job-related essential functions.
Special Requirement Information: Candidates must successfully complete a thorough background investigation, including a fingerprint search and polygraph examination. Candidates who are found to be unsuitable for employment as a Police Officer Trainee will be removed from the certification register pursuant to Civil Service Rule 6.04. prior to appointment. Examples of disqualifying factors include:
Any felony conviction or conviction;
Job-related misdemeanor convictions;
Poor employment history;
Poor credit history;
Substance abuse;
Certain serious traffic convictions or patterns of traffic violations (3 moving violations in one year, failure to appear, at fault accident, three-year probation drivers, suspended license, and driving under the influence).
AGE: At least 20 years of age at time of appointment.
