Eng Tech V Open (780)NATURE & SCOPE:
The National Ignition Facility (NIF) Project has an opening for an Electronics Technologist. Under minimal supervision, will provide technical support in the installation, activation, operation, and maintenance of Power Conditionng System (PCS) capacitor bank modules.This system employs at high voltage, high-energy capacitor bank used to power the large flashlamps in the NIF solid-estate laser amplifiers. This system includes pulsed power hardware and circuits, controls hardware and software, diagnostics and capacitor charging power supplies. Primary interactions will be with the lead experimenters, and electrical engineers of the project.ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Operate the PCS module system.
Run the computer control system, interpret diagnostic indications.
Follow detailed procedures to render the hardware “safe” for maintenance activities.
Direct the activities of fabrication technicians, coordinators and drafting personnel.
Diagnose and propose solutions to problems, with the system using oscilloscopes, computer-based diagnostics, multimeters, and other diagnostic tools.
Troubleshoot existing electronic systems. Design and develop test set-ups and procedures for component, subsystem, and system-level prototyping. Work with engineering team to improve designs.
Operate hi-potters and other high voltage instruments. Fabricate and install electronic and electromechanical hardware.
Maintain a close interface with the various programmatic and project elements to ensure teamwork and end-user communication.
Maintain accurate and complete documentation regarding the operation of the system and any problems and associated corrective actions. Follow up with design team and ensure that all solutions are incorporated into the final production documents.
Develop and document system operation and test procedures.
Train newly hired technicians as required.
Assure all assignments are performed in accordance with ES&H requirements and policies.
Participate in formal design review process.ESSENTIAL SKILLS:
AA/AS degree in electronic technology or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Demonstrated interpersonal skills; well organized, reliable and proactive.
Experience with proper techniques of shielding, grounding and EMI protection.
Understanding of high voltage systems and work procedures with relevant experience.
High-level skills, knowledge and ability in electronics technology. Willingness to lean new technology and techniques.
Experience working in a team environment, which includes scientists, engineers, technicians and designers.
Ability to work under minimal supervision.
Ability to work in a dynamic multi-disciplinary project environment with simultaneous commitments to performance, cost and schedule.
Ability to interface effectively with electrical and mechanical engineers and technicians.
Experience with an understanding of formal design review processes.
Experience making independent, fundamental decisions regarding a variety of technical problems.
DESIRED SKILLS:
Familiarity with Windows 95/NT PCs and embedded computers.
Experience with LabView and programming languages such as C.
Experience in the design and implantation of electronic/computer controls as well as actuators, motors, pneumatics and sensors.
Experience working in a team environment.
