Corrections Officer - Corrections Recrit
Ability to: Learn institutional policies and procedures relating to day-to day-operations; facility safety procedures; security policies and procedures. Learn basic first aid, physical fitness and recreational games common to jail recreation. Learn pertinent rules, regulations, policies and procedures; federal, state, and local statutes governing adult detention facilities; and American Correctional Association Standards. Learn to operate a radio using the 400 codes. Learn to recognize contraband and the effects of alcohol and dangerous drugs. Learn to recognize unusual occurrences and emergency situations and take appropriate action. Learn to command and use authority in supervising imates. Learn to apply proper force in handling inmates. Learn to testify with proper courtroom demeanor. Become familiar with cleaning tools, materials and methods used in cleaning detention areas. Read, understand, recall and apply moderately complex information. Verbally communicate with a varitety of people. Understand and follow oral and written instructions. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions and demonstrating intellectual capabilities Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities which may include the following: - Run while carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs. - Climb twelve flights of stairs - Strength to subdue resistant persons, lift, drag, or carry persons or objects - Walk or stand for extended period of time - Meet Department Medical Standards. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: - Making observations. - Communicating with others in person, on radio or telephone - Distinguishing voices in a crowd - Reading and writing. - Operating assigned equipment Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of: - Making sound decisions. - Demonstrating intellectual capabilities. Additional Information: Environmental Conditions: Correction Facility environment; exposure to dust, odors, noise, body vermin, symptoms of contagious and communicable diseases. Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for running, climbing, standing, squatting, and sitting for prolonged periods of time; strength to subdue persons, to drag, carry and lift persons and objects; dexterity to write; to be heard in noisy group situation. Other Conditions which apply to this classification: Wear a uniform and maintain a neat and clean appearance; study learning materials on off duty time; obey the laws of the State of Nevada, City of Las Vegas and the County
REQUIREMENTS
To attend, participate and successfully complete the assigned curriculum as presented by the LVMPD prior to being commissioned as a Corrections Officer for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED Receives immediate supervision from LVMPD Detention Services Division Academy Training staff. Minimum Qualifications: Special to this Classification; Must be 21 years of age at the time of written exam. Must be a Citizen of the United States at time of written exam. Must have no convictions of any crime for which registration in the State of Nevada is required pursuant to NRS 207.090 or 207.152. Experience and Training/Education Requirements Experience: No experience is required. Training/Education: Completion of the twelfth grade or possession of a General Education Diploma (GED). License or Certificate Possession of an appropriate valid Nevada driver's license at the time of hire. Essential and Marginal Functions: Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Essential Functions: Successfully complete all work assigned by DSD Academy Training Staff. Successfully complete all physical fitness course requirements assigned by DSD Academy Training Staff. Successfully complete all practical work problems as assigned by DSD Academy Training Staff. Knowledge of: Correct English usage, including spelling, punctuation and grammar in order to write reports, memoranda, legal descriptions and observational descriptions. Basic math calculations.
