Tankerman Trainee / Tankerman

Tankermen/Dock Operators prepare barges for the loading and discharging of cargoes, and perform key loading and discharging activities. They build tow by handling lines and cables to tie and untie barges and boats. Tankermen/Dock Operators connect and disconnect transfer hoses. They perform scheduled vessel maintenance care for tools and equipment, and perform general housekeeping duties as assigned by their supervisor. They adhere to company safety policies and procedures and governmental regulations. They work under the supervision of the Master.
REQUIREMENTS
1)Attaches and removes line and cables to and from the vessel, barges, docks and locks. This involves: carrying coiled lines, ratchets, rigging, cables or other equipment from line lockers, deck lockers, or decks to attachment sites, making attachments using manual or power winches to tighten lines or cables; and monitoring and adjusting lines and tension during towing, loading, discharging, locking or docking.2)Unties and reties lines 4 to 8 times during loading and discharging in order to adjust for the changing height of the barge, relative to the height of other barges, the dock and the vessel.3)Transfers cargo. This involves attaching and disconnecting 6” diameter hoses from and based facilities to barge pipes. The Tankerman/Dock Operator joins fittings using a ratchet.4)Regulates the flow of cargo through pipes by turning valve wheels. Keeps barges on an even keel by visual check of the barge itself, by looking at draft marks on hull, and by using a sight glass to check a gauge tree outside the tank except on split loads.
