The Services for Persons With Special Needs (SPSN) division is dedicated to serving individuals with developmental disabilities of any age. Support services may be provided in the consumer’s home, in their local community or in a foster-care, residential setting provided by Volunteers of America. All staff are supervised by professionally trained program supervisors who assist in setting up the support services and in training the direct care staff.

About This Position

Our Mora Group Homes have several part-time and full-time Direct Support Person positions available. All shifts are available including weekend and overnight hours. Volunteers of America offers a excellent benefit package for employees working 30 or more hours per week.

The Direct Support Person’s (DSP) performance of duty as a professional is as one member of the interdisciplinary team. It is the Direct Support Person who is involved with the consumer’s support program and applies it in the daily living situation of the consumer. The support plan to be carried out with a consumer is that established by the interdisciplinary team with the Program Supervisor being the person responsible for finalizing the DSP’s role in the plan. Duties include:

Working with developmentally disabled persons.
Assisting in the implementation of the consumer’s support plan.
Recognizing behavior patterns, assessing and understanding the behavior patterns and needs of consumers, suggesting changes and revisions as needed.
Correctly administering and recording all medications given and/or documenting all medical concerns as presented by the consumer.
Assisting in base-lining and evaluating consumer’s behavior before and after use of medication.
Scheduling and transporting consumers to appointments as indicated by the Program Supervisor.
Informing the Program Supervisor of all health needs/concerns of the consumers.
Implementing medical support services as directed by the Supervisor or health care professional.
Assuring that the living environment is safe and know fire and severe weather policies and procedures.
Supervising the consumers in carrying out daily living routines; assuring the living environment is clean.
Effectively communicating with both the team and consumers.
REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Job Requirements

High School Diploma or GED (may be waived by supervisor);
Valid drivers license and insurance coverage;
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
Ability to work with a diverse population of individuals by using tact, diplomacy and flexibility;
Must pass the background check required by State and County licensing agencies;
First Aid, CPR and medication certification may be required as part of training;
Must be 18 years of age or older.
