Director of Learning Solutions
The Thomson Career and Professional Group was recently
formed due to the integration of Thomson Delmar Learning and Thomson
Course Technology.The Director of Learning Solutions will lead the vision and strategy
development process for new product acquisition and development for the
business unit’s product program. Manage the growth and development of the
business unit’s products and market verticals, manage publishers, product
development managers, executive editors, acquisitions editors, and project
managers, set direction and processes, supervise market research, manage
the creation and implementation of strategic plans, set standards for
product development, monitor and control project progress and expenses,
visit customers, and manage the product program to achieve Thomson
criteria for growth and profitability.Take responsibility for
recruiting, hiring, and training Publishers, Product Development Managers
(PDMs), Executive Editors, Acquisitions Editors (AEs), Associate Editors,
Project Managers, and Editorial Assistants (EAs) for their assigned
publishing programs.
Take responsibility for ensuring that all approved new projects meet CPG’s
financial standards, forecast sales realistically, budget expenses
responsibly, and detail a schedule appropriate to the needs of the
product.
Collaborate with the Vice President of the Business Unit to develop the
annual Strategic Plan to insure maximum growth and profitability of the
Unit’s product development program. The Director of Information and
Learning Solutions is also responsible for ensuring that new product and
its development reflects the overall strategic vision of the Business
Unit, consistent with its vertical market goals.
Work with direct reports to manage the creation of strategic plans to
chart the Business Unit’s strategy for carrying out the goals of the
Business Unit’s strategic vision.
Take responsibility for performance reviews, development plans, goal
setting, and bonus plans for all direct reports.
Lead the scheduling of new projects, monitor that schedule, and take the
necessary steps to keep the schedule on track.
Charter, assign, and supervise market research to optimize new product
development, enter new markets, and innovate in existing markets.
Establish best practice, to ensure timely, accurate, competitive, and
innovative products.
In collaboration with the Vice President of the Business Unit, manage the
operating expense budget to ensure maximum value within the parameters
allowed.
Collaborate with the Director of Marketing to help maximize the product’s
potential in the market place.
Collaborate with the Director of Production and the Director of Technology
in the design, production and manufacturing of the Business Unit’s
products to ensure their timely introduction to the marketplace and
maximum sales potential.
Prepare complete, accurate, and detailed reports and deliver them on
schedule: monthly reports, copyright schedules, business plans, and other
special reports as requested.
Responsible for the reviewing and signing of all contributor agreements,
freelance agreements, work-for-hires and other legal documents as agreed
upon by the Vice President of the Business Unit.
In collaboration with the Vice President of the Business Unit and the
Senior Vice President & General Manager, take a leadership role in broad
initiatives to improve margins, streamline operating processes, develop
personnel, comply with new mandates, and further the goals of the Thomson
Career and Professional Group.
Perform other duties as needed to ensure achievement of team goals.
REQUIREMENTS
BA/BS degree; Master’s degree preferred. At least 5 to 7
years of demonstrated success as a leader responsible for the acquisition
and creation of learning and information solutions or comparable
management experience, including consistent acquisitions and sales
performance. Strong leadership skills, effective facilitator and
communicator, proven negotiation skills, innovative, experienced at
leading development of information workflow solutions for practicing
professionals. Excellent interpersonal, presentation, writing, management
and leadership skills that foster positive and constructive interaction
with employees at all levels of the organization.
