Transportation Economist

Our Transportation Analysis and Risk Assessment group specializes in providing expert services to a variety of state and federal transportation clients in a number of key areas, including: (a) transportation data collection and analysis, (b) hazardous materials transportation/risk assessment, (c) regulatory analysis, and (d) economic analysis.
The selected candidate will work onsite in the U.S. Department of Transportation Headquarters in Washington, DC (Metro accessible), supporting the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, Office of Hazardous Materials Safety. Primary job responsibilities will include:
- Regulatory analysis. Analyze current and proposed regulations and examine data required to support regulatory evaluations.
Benefit-cost analysis. Perform benefit-cost analysis of proposed regulations and government programs, including identifying benefit-cost elements, monetizing the impacts of these elements, and benefit-cost modeling.
Return on investment analysis. Measure the returns to private industry tied to the deployment of transportation safety technologies.
Organize and analyze data. Prepare databases, worksheets, charts, graphs, and tables to present data.
Report writing. Prepare written reports of results.
Communication. Maintain both formal and informal communications and good relationships with internal and external clients.
REQUIREMENTS
Candidate resumes must demonstrate the following minimum requirements in order to be considered:
- Bachelor's degree in economics plus 5 or more years of experience OR a Master's degree in economics plus 2 or more years of experience
Experience in conducting regulatory analysis, benefit-cost analysis, return on investment analysis, or econometric analysis
Proficiency with PCs and all Microsoft Office software
Additional selection criteria will include the ability to demonstrate outstanding initiative and be results-oriented, communicate very well both verbally and in writing, and work effectively both independently and in a multi-disciplinary, team-oriented environment. Experience in the hazardous materials transportation sector is desired.
