Passionately lead the safety programs and serve as a role model for safety attitudes and behavior. Ensure that safety is an integral part of each employee’s job and be visible and active on the manufacturing floor each day. Embrace the principle that all occupational injuries and illnesses are preventable. Fully engage in occupational/injury illness prevention and be totally committed to active involvement in managing occupational injuries/illnesses. Work closely with the Industrial Hygiene and the Environmental positions at the site to ensure coordination of all EHS disciplines. Also, lead and sponsor safety committees.Responsiblities
Coordinate and document process hazard analyses, Hazop studies, and safety pre-startups.
Establish and communicate safe practices through procedure development, training, and audits (involve supervisors and document). Includes the following areas:
Basic safety rules
Fire protection (system maintenance, drills, fire brigade)
Lockout/Tag out
Fall protection
Confined space entry
Manage occupational injury/illness through incident investigation and corrective action. Participate in interviews of the injured party and witnesses, as well as any other elements of the investigation. When possible, accompany employees seeking medical assistance.
Maintain the OSHA log and metrics related to the site’s rate of injury/illnesses.
Promote safety and recognize superior performance by communicating with employee population and providing incentives.
Maintain the DOT Security plan.
Monitor contractor safety; implement an orientation program, audits and corrective actions. Maintain metrics to measure safety performance of contractors.
Act as the primary EHS contact for site management and serve on the Plant Leadership Team.Education and Experience Requirements
B.S. in a safety or engineering-related field; master’s degree in safety related discipline is a plus
8-10 years of experience in safety at a manufacturing site, preferably in the pharmaceutical industry
Certified Safety Engineer or equivalent
Knowledge of: OSHA, NFPA, 29 CFR 1910
Effective verbal and written communication
Excel, Power Point proficiency
Ability to be proactive and possess the initiative to take charge of a situation
Ability to think quickly, “outside the box,” and be extremely resourceful
Ability to network within Shire and with appropriate professional organizations
Ability to work with government agencies concerning safety practices
