Mutual Fund Reporter

Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
A reporter is needed to cover news across the mutual fund industry. This position will be filled in either San Francisco or Boston. The candidate will be required to develop and cultivate sources as well as write about day-to-day and longer-term strategic issues in the industry, including ongoing consolidation, regulatory issues and other topics. This beat includes coverage of several non-public firms as well as publicly traded companies. The candidate will write daily stories providing a moment-by-moment account of what’s happening in the market for an audience of institutional and retail investors, all on tight deadlines. The candidate will also be asked to cover spot news, corporate earnings, conferences, etc., contributing small “pulse” items and turning them into short stories.
REQUIREMENTS
Position Requirements:
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* monitoring private and publicly-traded mutual fund firms and asset managers, including but not limited to Fidelity, Vanguard, Putnam and Legg Mason, spotting trends and integrating into sharp, readable copy
* writing headlines and news “pulses” under real-time deadlines
* covering earnings and conferences, and write spot news stories
* be in regular contact with company representatives, investors and industry experts
* writing and contributing to features * breaking out short news items into full stories

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
The candidate must possess 3-5 years experience as a financial reporter, preferably covering the asset manager/mutual fund industry. S/he must have a working understanding of company earnings statements as well as fund rating systems and SEC filings. S/he must be able to work in a deadline environment and be able to interact easily with others. Must be a team player, as this posting requires more cross team relations than others. Good spelling and grammar are extremely important. Excellent writing and communication skills required. Prior web experience preferred. Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook and other email interfaces (Hotmail, AOL, Earthlink, etc.). Bachelor or equivalent degree a plus.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The work environment is generally casual and favorable. Lighting and temperature are adequate and there are no hazardous or unpleasant conditions caused by noise, dust, etc. The work environment is fast-paced and interaction with all levels and functions of the company is required. Deadlines are common within the company, which can create a stressful environment at times.
